Plus, the Continental Army did not have much training, unlike British Army had already formed for a long time. So, George Washington did not choose to face the British Army directly. General George Washington asked the continental soldiers to cross an icy river in one night during the Christmas in 1776. They even directly went into a winter storm of sleet and snow. The decision looks like it was irrational, however it was based on Washington’s strategy. He believes after a long time of tough fighting without a lot of major victory, the Continental Army would want a victory to continue this war. And he thought only by giving surprise to the highly trained Hessian during the Christmas could help his army get a chance. So, Washington neglected the hard condition of winter and continue doing the march. Washington also kept his plan as a secret, none of the soldiers knew anything about their upcoming mission before crossing the Delaware River. On December 25, 1776, Washington led his army to cross the river at night and went to town of Trenton, New Jeresey to attack the Hessian garrison before dawn.
