Once they were born into their class there was no social mobility. If someone was born a peasant, there was no opportunity for them to climb the social hierarchy into the class of knights or higher. This system of organization, power, and influence, used in the Middle Ages, provided protection and safety for the people by giving a stable social order. When abiding by this system, people were joined together by promises of loyalty (Frey 2). Due to this, the key elements in the feudal system were loyalty and faith ( "The Central"). Loyalty and trust were important during this time because this system was used when communication was difficult, therefore the society was primarily based on relationships (Hazen 109). Every level had its own needs, whether economic, military, or both. Every class also gave specific things to the other classes so their needs would be met, this was once again a mixture of military and economic needs.
