Gorge Zimmerman a neighborhood watchman on February 26, 2012 decided 19 year old Trayvon Martin; a young unarmed African American boy, wearing a hoody was a threat and subsequently shot him. Regardless of what political orientation or race one is, there is only one reason Zimmerman considered Martin a threat, because of his race .Race matters because it is the skeleton which certain beliefs, attitudes, opinions, assumptions, and biased conclusions are shaped. The failure for Zimmerman to be acquitted for the murder of Trayvon martin highlights the failure of democracy towards African Americans, and explicitly shows why black lives matter should be a priority. Shortly, after the Zimmerman verdict was the emergence of the black lives matter movement,…

Doel Diaz PHI 238 10/23/2017 ML King vs. the Clergy Section one of the 13th Amendment states the following, “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” This amendment was passed by congress on January 31, 1865, which officially declared the abolishment of slavery in the United States. Since then, there has been long animosity between races living in the United States, simply because of the color of their skin. Racism reached its peak among blacks and whites during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.…
This occurrence sparked an uprising the black community surrounding Los Angeles. Blacks began to destroy their own city, wrecking buildings, businesses and destroying anyone who wasn't on their side. They wanted to send a clear message to the LAPD showing them what would happen if the attacks on their people wouldn’t stop. When the riots were all said and done King walked away with 3.8 million dollars, just a small fraction of what he requested, and the officers responsible walked away with 2.5 years in prison for the violation of Kings civil rights. This marked the end of the LA Riots but it did not stop the blacks from harboring anger and losing any and all trust that they had in the LAPD.…
Cordell Adams Holt Legal systems 8 October 2017 Plessy v.s Ferguson and Brown v.s Board of education Huge changes to equal rights in America all started in 1892 from two cases, first Homère Patrice Adolphe Plessy v.s judge John H. Ferguson followed by Oliver Brown v.s Board of Education. The Plessy v.s Ferguson case first created the idea of separate but equal in 1896, but in 1954 that changed, in a good way due to the popular case known as Brown v.s Board of education. These cases Plessy v.s Ferguson and Brown v.s Board of education both severely impacted segregation in America, the reason why we are not splitting up bus seats and schools based on race. First, 1892 the change started with a court decision “separate but equal from…
Allusion is very adequate because it concedes the audience to build reciprocity in their consciousness. The reason he does this is to state openly the injustices history had through time and how it is repeating again, like when he mentioned Birmingham and its fraudulent laws. He displays satire of Birmingham and braces the debate of honorable and dishonorable law: “We can never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was “legal” and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was “illegal.” It was “illegal” to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany”. King is not frightened for saying the truth.…
In response to the deaths of Mike Brown (27 August 2014) and Ferguson (09 August 2014), many protests emerged throughout the nation. “The police response to the uprising was intended to repress and punish the population, who had dared to defy their authority” (155). As the daily protests went on, the police brutality of Ferguson increased as a result of “frustration that they {police} could not make the Black men and women of Ferguson submit” (156). The Ferguson rebellion became the “focal point for the growing anger in Black communities across the country” (157). The young people of Ferguson experienced daily harassment.…
When I started my project I had to figure out the order I wanted the video clips and statistic to go in (see appendix 9). So the video would not have a sense of clutter ness. I decided to open my video up with a news clip that portrayed racial profiling in action. The reason I choose to start it off with a news clip is because it grabs the viewer attention. The next thing in my video was a quote from Martin Luther King which stated “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”…
Before I set out on my journey of acquiring more information about systemic racism prevalent in our nation today, I often fell into the trap of not believing racism existed today since the actions I associated with racism, like the backlash to the Civil Rights Movement in the ‘60s, did not occur anymore, to my limited knowledge. It wasn’t until the shootings of Trayvon Martin and later, Michael Brown that I began to seriously consider the topic of race in America. I can admit that I had a lot of push back in my mind to the idea of police brutality and profiling of people of color, in particular, African-American men. I used to strictly abide by societal rules, so if someone broke the law or was up to nefarious activities, then they deserved to be punished. But the concept of killing a person who was unarmed really forced me to reevaluate my beliefs over race and racism.…
Race relation is always a problem in the society. Different people have different feelings or opinions about races. It is hard to have race equality in a society, but we can eliminate inequality among races. Legal system can be an issue when there are discriminations, everyone should be treated equally when they are facing the legal system. For example, if someone has to use the legal system to do something, he/she should be treated equally no matter what race he/…
The police used their political and racial views to attack African Americans ad in turn ignited violence and anarchy among their city. Policing will always be one of the hardest jobs in this country and their split second responses will be analyzed endlessly but we can only hope they react in a way that confirms their vow to protect and…
The essay “the Destruction of Culture” by Chris Hedges proved to be a cue for my ignorance. The stories of our countries past world endeavors was exposed for it’s likely existence: fiction. I always thought that everything we were taught was one hundred percent truth, set-in-stone. Why would we ever be taught something inaccurate? Education is education, I said.…
But in most cases it’s evident that what these officers do, is not within their job description. Before some of us were born, the issue with Rodney King transpired. Some young people, like myself, hadn’t heard of this case before, so after doing extensive research I can say without exaggerating that I am utterly astonished and disgusted. You’d think that after choosing a topic like this, I’d understand more, but the truth is that we won’t ever get accustomed to the way police officers act sometimes. Allow me to give you a brief insight to what happened the night of March 3, 1991.…
With his defiance, he was refusing to participate in America’s plan for a nation far away from home, especially when that plan called for murdering the enemy and violated his faith. Ali couldn’t accept betraying his faith for America while in a foreign land, only to return home to a culture of racial bias and discrimination by the country he just served. 6 Civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.'s came to Ali’s defense. " He is giving up millions of dollars to do what his conscience tells him is right," King said. 7 The possibility of being killed or maimed in a war zone for a country that was hostile to black Americans was not worth the price of betraying his faith.…
In the Summer of 2013, the Black Lives Matter movement came to fruition in the wake of George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a young and unarmed black male. Since then, the movement has demonstrated against other deaths of many black men believed to have been victims of police brutality. Despite the scrutiny behind police practices such as the chokehold and racial profiling, which are both deemed illegal, the police have not changed these practices and instead made them legal under different names such as the “headlock” and the “drug courier profile”. In response to the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2014 killings of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, the Blue Lives Matter movement was created. Instead…
