Much of this was influenced by the weather in Seattle that could swing from cold to warm in a short amount of time. Loggers and lumberjacks wore this style as a necessity rather than for fashion. The fabrics and colors were lighter and brighter, reflecting the brightness of the music, the theatre, and prosperous times. Men with ukeleles, racoon coats and bell-bottom trousers were called "sheiks". A lot of men’’s fashion was based on sports stars and their style, white trousers and V-neck sweaters grew in popularity as tennis became better known. Hats became a fashion staple and men wore stiff-brimmed hats called boaters (or skimmers, it depended on the width of the brim). This idea applies to any music related clothing article, such as the girl playing the saxophone while wearing a saxophone pin, we get it. Likewise, an astonishing accessory common among TBO are medals. This past weekend, I witnessed four people wearing an allstate medal around their necks. Knowing personally myself what an honor it is to have an allstate medal presented to you, I have mine proudly hung up in my room, not hung around my neck, bragging about my abilities (allstate is the highest level honor band you can be accepted into during high school). Other outfits may be worn by TBO, such as the gentleman I saw on Saturday who was obviously auditioning for SEIBA jazz, as he looked like he had just come from a recent poetry slam that played smooth jazz over the radio; You know what I’m talking about, with the scarves and hats and attitude of sophistication.…

Between 1969 and 1999 there were cultural changes in the country´s diversity and attitude and tastes in music. At Woodstock in 1969, the music performed created an atmosphere of what Woodstock is most remembered for; “three days of peace, love & music” (Ostroff). When listening to the acts performed for the 500,000 Americans in attendance, its no wonder the reputation stuck. Richie Havens’ version of the famed Beatles hit Here Comes the Sun brings the sense of unity and glimmer of hope that everyone there needed to hear, and varying song of the same gene added to the level of comfort sought by many. Others were there in a peaceful protest to the world events of the Vietnam War, especially through The Viet Nam Song performed by Joe McDonald.…

Enhancement of the message of “Rock and Roll” by Sibyl James is reached through the continuous personification of the music style throughout the entire poem. To really explain the rebellious, sexual, and reckless sense of Rock and Roll, James transforms the music into a guy of this nature. This male figure used to represent the music is not only acting recklessly, but is also coexisting with other signature American things, to show that Rock and Roll was an original concept conceived in America. It begins with him “tap dancin’ all over the red velvet seats, shakin’ his tight lil’ punk ass out the window, and curdlin’ the Dairy Queens.” This personification used in the first stanza is used to not only show that Rock and Roll was a part of American culture, much like…

Leather jackets were likely to have first been made as military uniforms for German pilots during World War I, they served as a protective outerwear layer. In 1928, a few years after WWI came the existence of the Perfecto jacket through a partnership between Beck Industries, a Harley-Davidson distributor, and Irving Schott, manufacturing clothing company located in New York city. It is believed that Beck asked the Schott brothers to design a leather jacket that could withstand extreme weather and most types of accidents. The aesthetics of the film holds that traditional hippie, smoking, drugs, love and peace theme that is known for the time period. At the time, youth “struggled with feelings of alienation from the social, economic and political forces around them,” and sought solace in the feeling of community that punk provided. This manifested in angry lyrics, violent concerts, and a way of self-expression through style that placed them within a minority that was speaking up about the injustices they felt they were being faced with. For these reasons, punk is – and was – a complex movement that merged both fashion and politics to become a multifaceted movement with no clear definition or aims. To now consider the ways that punk can be defined through the lens of politics and fashion is to…
