Many studies have shown that early detection, prevention and treatment of chronic diseases is crucial to extending life. Kidney disease can be detected by a blood test to check glomerular filtration rate, an urine test to check for protein and checking one’s blood pressure (National Institute of Health, 2008). One instance in the book“Mama Might Be Better off Dead” where I felt uncomfortable with the service rendered has a social worker was when Robert did a urine test and renal biopsy. I have seeing first-hand how the medical community treats clients as an illness and demonstrate poor bedside manners. In these medical encounters many of my clients reported feeling intimated by doctors and blame themselves for their circumstance. My role is to make sure my client’s voice is being heard, work from a place of compassion and advocate on their behalf. In the character Robert’s case, the social worker should treat him with respect; explore opportunities to address barriers to care while promoting self-determination.
