Robberies In Chicagoland

Improved Essays
In the beginning of every week, our local news stations like to report about the past weekend’s homicide because quite frankly because every weekend has one. What they do not report as much is all the robberies that happen which is at a much higher rate than homicide and can easily lead to homicide. If we address violent crimes like robberies in the largest Chicago community, we can avoid many potentially fatal outcomes across the Chicagoland area. The robbery rate in the Austin community is among the highest in the Chicagoland area("Crime in Chicagoland," 2017). Robberies in the Austin community seems to spike at 9 pm around street locations("Crime in Chicagoland," 2017). Furthermore, in the last month or so there have been 79 robberies("Crime …show more content…
Within the last year, there were a total of 779 robberies committed in the Austin community("Crime in Chicagoland," 2017). When looking at data starting from 2001 to now, the robbery rate in the Austin community has not really increased or decreased, which means to me nothing has really been done to address this concern("Crime in Chicagoland," 2017). Robbery in this community seemingly happens anywhere at any time; in the morning, afternoon, late at night, in alleys, at CTA stops or just walking down the street("CLEARmap," 2017). The majority of robberies in the Austin community includes the use of a handgun by one of more African American offenders from ages 18-30 years old when victims are alone walking to their vehicles in the dark("CLEARmap," 2017). Sadly, zooming out to see the whole community with our GIS mapping software for the past six months or so caused an error stating you needed to zoom in because there was too much information presented at one time("CrimeReports," 2017). Our software is capable of handling a lot of data so it is shocking to see it overloaded with data so much so that you need to change the area parameters in order to clearly see the …show more content…
It was also noticed that there were many robberies also committed in nearby communities and towns near the Austin neighborhood during the six month period("CrimeReports," 2017). The most recent robberies committed in the Austin community was on October 3, 2017, at 10:24 am and then again at 4 pm by an African American male using a handgun in an alley or on a sidewalk("AustinTalks," 2017). This leads me to believe the same culprits are carrying out the robberies in areas they are familiar with and probably reside in. It is important to note that in the U.S., violent crimes similar to robberies have gone up 3.9%("Increase in Violent," 2016). In the Austin community, violent crimes have gone up 10%("Crime in Chicagoland," 2017). Also, 327,374 robberies across the nation in 2015 were committed with a grand total of losses equaling $390 million at an average of $1,190 per offense("Increase in Violent," 2016). In the community of Austin, most of the robberies total loss each offense is under $300("CLEARmap," 2017). That means these offenders are just looking for the opportunity to rob anyone no matter what they have on them. There is no premeditation to robbing a specific person or thing. We need to discourage the thought of wanting to commit

The Family of Chicago In almost all cities there is violence; however, Chicago stands out above most for violence and crime rates. Crime rates will decrease when people unite as a close knit community by experiencing the fun of Chicago. When a community becomes close knit they act like a family and families don’t let other people hurt their family. If the city of Chicago offers a weekend for all to come down and experience Chicago, individuals will come together.…

In Richard B. Felsons’ Another cost of being a young black male: Race, weaponry, and lethal outcomes in assaults, the reader is meant to understand the fact that most of the time violent crime is intraracial. A main talking point during the first week of lecture is the idea that crime is an expression of fear. Felson can be seen pointing to this idea in the beginning of the article when he states that “evidence suggests that blacks are generally more likely to carry guns and knives than whites” (Felson, Painter-Davis 2012). I feel as though this suggestion relates to blacks in inner cities more than anywhere because those locations prove to be hot spots for crime which would make all the more sense to why blacks would feel the need to carry weapons on them more often than whites. This proves to be a continuous circle of problems for blacks in these communities because when most of them feel the need to carry…

I am writing you this paper, in regards to agree with some of the material you have provided in your detailed articles, both published by The Southern Illinoisan. On August 21 and 24, 2016, thesouthern.com published “Violence Creates Conundrum” and “Gun Violence spikes in Carbondale.” I know that I will never speak to neither one of you directly, but I would like to address some of the material included in your articles. The Carbondale community has witnessed a drastic rise in violent and property crimes within the year of 2016. In addition, “Violence Creates Conundrum” included a statistical approach showing a visual aspect of total number of shooting incidents that have occurred in Carbondale, Illinois, which I find appealing.…

For one reason, crime affects us all. Even if you manage to avoid being the victim of a gun crime, our social fabric is being tattered and frayed by violence and crime, diminishing the quality of our lives. But even more important, every American citizen is heir to a centuries-old tradition of liberty and rights. Trading liberty and rights away in return for a false sense of security is a bad idea, one that we will regret only when it’s too late to reclaim our…

Rich Poor Live or Die to kill or not to kill this is the question To sit in a court room quietly observing everyone and everything around you; thinking over and over again about the decision made. This is not only the reality of the person on trial but also that of the juror. In Texas we may be the second largest state in the land (United States) but first in the country when it comes to crime, despite our overwhelming history and support for the death penalty. When people think of New Orleans they think of Bourbon street, Mardi Gras, food, and now a high crime rate. The murder rate has sporadically changed over the years, having a large spike after hurricane Katrina. New Orleans needs to shed the image of violence and death that it now has. New Orleans’s crime and murder rate will continue to rise if people do not do something to quell the pointless violence plaguing the once vibrant city. One of the major reasons New Orleans’s crime rate is at such a high level is because of police incompetence and inefficiency.…

The finished product is SANDAG’s Criminal Justice Bulletin. The CJ bulletin is produced biennially in a series of three publications. The first series of the 2013 CJ bulletin focused exclusively on part 1 offenses (homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault); property crime is not included partly because of the inconsistency in determining who the victim is, which makes it difficult to accurately document victim characteristics (SANDAG, 2016). Violent crimes are of great concern to both law enforcement and the public in general and having a better understanding of how individuals are affected by violent crimes, law enforcement will be better prepare to develop crime preventions and intervention strategies to overcome them (SANDAG, 2016). SANDAG’s CJ Bulletin looks at the demographics, age, and gender when determining victim characteristics.…
