In 732 AD, Charles Martel defeated the Muslim army at the Battle of Tours, (modern-day France). This victory over the Muslims helped maintain Christianity in Europe and stopped the Muslims from expanding any further (Doc C). It wasn't until 751 AD that the Merovingian Dynasty was replaced by the Carolingian empire. The immense expansion of the Franks started when Charlemagne took control of the dynasty in 768 AD. During Charlemagne's period of authority over the Franks, he was crowned “Holy Roman Emperor” by the Pope (Doc A). Once he had this title, he gained the support of the Christian people. If Charles Martel had lost to the Muslims at the Battle of Tours, the Muslims would have continued to expand into Europe, presumably getting rid of the catholic identity of the Franks and Europe. Also, as Charlemagne promoted the expansion of the Carolingian dynasty, more and more territory was being added and higher portions of land were being put together for the next generation of leaders. The empire would eventually be divided among Charlemagne's three grandsons in the Treaty of Verdun.(Doc H). Soon after, the empire began to collapse and weaken. Charlemagne chose the most sensible men from among his nobles and decided to spread them throughout the empire. They were referred to as the “Missi Dominici” (Doc E). These nobles were in charge of making sure the common people adhere to the laws of the dynasty. Charlemagne brought a feeling of surveillance to the region in Europe. Also, to assure that the nobles were acting alongside him, he only granted them a small portion of the territory (Doc G). In doing so, he had more land to give to more people in exchange for their loyalty, creating a system that was neither corrupt nor unsafe. Charlemagne also brought attention to the need for education. He made it so that all the boys in the country had an opportunity to learn. He addressed to the kids that he would appreciate them more if they showed their will to learn. Charlemagne also made it clear that he was not fond of the individuals who chose to handle the situations lightly (Doc F). Then, in turn, the youth of the dynasty gradually began to see the importance of their education. Through the years, the Franks would continue to stress the relevance of an education. In this case, the Franks influenced medieval Europe by establishing a safe and secure empire and by helping develop somewhat of an educational learning
