Many people do not realize the immense impact of our words. With one simple sentence a person’s whole life can turn around. We can’t always understand that any word we say can be locked in a person’s heart for the rest of their lives! When people talk to each other, they each want to see how the other person thinks of them or what they are saying. A few words can make a person think that they or a unique precious human being or chas shalom a worthless piece of skin that is wasting precious space. What other people think about us, takes a big role on how we think of ourselves. So the way we speak can make a person or break a person, depending on how much we think about the ripple effect.

Deborah Tannen, professor of linguistics at Georgetown University, evaluate the difference between direct and Indirect communication and its effectiveness towards peoples’ way of life with her essay How to Give Orders Like a Man. Tannen challenges the belief that talking in an indirect way indubitably reveals an absence of self-confidence or shows a powerless individual who has no real authority. There are multiple aspects touching on how each individual communicates with others, such as gender, culture, and relationship. The first scenario involves a university president expecting a visit from Mr. Smith, a member of the board of trustees. Her secretary notified her that Mr. Smith was waiting, she left her office and entered the reception…

In the book, Choosing Civility, the author P.M. Forni argues that “the byproduct of doing justice to other is the enrichment of our own lives,” which is exemplified in the rule “speaking kindly.” I agree with Forni, that speaking kindly to others will benefit our lives as we speak kindly more often than not. Most likely there are many people out in the world who believe they speak kindly to others, I am one of those people myself. Throughout researching and testing this rule I have come to find that to speak kindly is not just saying a few nice words, but it is also to not speak ill to others and to also to give praise where needed.…

In the Ted Talk on “how to speak so that people want to listen,” Julian Treasure explains how to speak powerfully. According to Treasure, our voices are the most powerful sound in the world. In today’s society, we lost our sound due to our habits or rather the seven deadly sin of speaking. The seven deadly sins which are gossiping, judging, being negative, making excuse, exaggeration and dogmatism are making it difficult to grasp others attention. Instead of diving into these seven deadly sins, Treasure suggested we build a powerful foundation we can stand on.…

She said it is okay to make mistake because you don't get better if you don't try it and mistakes make you better. All writers struggle to write shitty first drafts, but they never give up. After you’re done reading the first draft, start revising your first draft then begin to structure into the second draft.…

When I came to the United States, I was educated and spoke English. It was British English; the pronunciation, spellings of some words and some of the grammar were completely different. When I enrolled in middle school, everybody made fun of me; all the students thought I was not smart because I could not communicate with them in American English. However, it was not just hard to communicate with other men, but it was also hard to communicate with women because I am a man. I believe that there is a difference in how individuals communicate; it all depends on a person’s gender and the language he or she grew up speaking.…

The second prostration indicated the wisdom and compassion upon the individual from Buddha and Bodhisattva’s. When bowing their head to the ground it is indicating humility, as the head is the most important part of the body, it holds all the sense organs and the most important organ, our brain. Self-identity is also related with the face, as we will describe a person by their face usually. The opportunities in bowing are many when it comes down to Buddhism, as there are many things to bow down to that is higher than your own personal ego-self.…

The movie Crash consisted of several forms of communication from nonverbal, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. Nonverbal communication is all kinds of human messages and responses not expressed in words. Usually when watching movies I tend to not pay attention and focus towards what 's going on. The movie crash fits perfect for the crash because it focuses on main communications points and topics we spoke over in class. There was a scene when the officer non verbally assaulted Cameron Thayer’s wife by rubbing her private areas while “searching” Mrs.Thayer.…

To use the knowledge acquired during this course one needs to identify and understand the barriers to effective communication. These barriers maybe physical, and or psychological obstacles that interfere with the planning, organization, transmission and understanding of a message. In my case I have identified my obstacles as been impatience, not listening and most importantly not been able to express myself in an effective way. I have come to learn that the natural result of such obstacles or interfering factors leads to the misunderstanding of messages.…

Society has transitioned from being polite and appropriate to utilizing sarcasm and acronyms. Using sarcasm has become a skill acquired by those with creative minds, straining to communicate in a less invasive manner than their initial triggered response. “Some language experts suggest sarcasm is used as a sort of gentler insult, a way to tone down criticism with indirectness and humor (Chin 109).” Generally speaking, normal communication will be intertwined with sarcasm when one person is trying to make a point to the other, without being outright rude. Utilizing sarcasm can be rude and hurtful, although the person delivering the sarcasm makes light of the situation by attempting to be humorous in delivering their message.…

It was one conversation that I have never forgotten. It changed the course of my life. I would not consider it a successful conversation, but one that I reflect on a lot and I think that I have used it as a template in my life, not as an example of not to follow.…

    1. Introduction Conversations are often a part of my classroom teaching. I have used this to teach target language or to introduce functional language such as to interrupt, agree or disagree etc. This has always been something that is appreciated by my learners; however as a teacher this has never been done with conscious effort or to let students ‘express themselves’ per se or backed up by theoretical underpinning. I have chosen to focus on turn-taking in conversation for opinions hoping to learn more about it and thus making learning more meaningful for my learners in turn.…
