Ripped Notebook Monologue

The entry after that, was the day he decided to drop out of High School, to disappear into nothingness, and blames everyone for his misery, vowing justice that only God himself can dole out. Yeah, there’s a scary pattern here. More pages we sifted through were mostly his talking about family, and his anger and frustration towards his former classmates, years after high school ended. There was a large gap in entries, every few weeks he would start his dark bible verses, then every few months, and the verses get crazier, as if they were intended book ends to this dark manifesto… then it ends. There were more pages, in the two hundred ruled notebook but a large chunk of them were torn out, as shown by evidence of ripped notebook shredding …show more content…
It’s always family that sows the seeds of hatred because ignorance clouds common sense.” I stare at Carl, this revelation was new to me, as I never considered Ryan to be the hateful type, but it’s all said here in the notes so why is Carl sticking up for him? Carl goes on: “It’s… complicated, when Ryan dropped out I remained in contact with him and his family. Though I find it a bit insulting his folks think I’m one of the good ones.” This was a bit surprising, but Carl also went into detail that over the years, he distanced himself from Ryan, around the time he went into the Navy, there was a falling out and it was the last time they have spoken. He says it started when he told Ryan about his girlfriend when stationed in Korea and free college education, Ryan started becoming jealous and verbally abusive, even referring to Carl as the N-word in a fit of rage. At some Ryan tried to get Carl to do drugs, Carl, knowing minorities get the short end of the stick refuses Ryan would get upset and give him the whole “you think you’re better than me!” speech. There were fits of insanity, especially when Ryan started going off with dark bible verses and satanic imagery, Carl admitted to feeling a sense of fear and couldn’t be around someone so bitter. There were moments in that friendship where Ryan would snap at Carl, and would send him various horrific bible imagery through social …show more content…
Meaning, that if word gets out that the case is reopened, it could give Ryan a window to leave town. It makes sense, that since I wanted this and talked to Ryan about it, and how nervous and shifty he became it’s understandable. In the heat of this revaluation, I told Carl that I did talk to Ryan yesterday. Carl surprised, asked me about his behavior, his current attitude. I explained that the reason I came to Ryan was to get the meaning behind some of the dark scriptures and the Deuteronomy sign. Getting a straight answer though, was difficult, as if Ryan was avoiding to answer the question, hoping to throw me off his trail. I also told Carl that Ryan warned me to stay away from the school, but before that, I

Chris McCandless’ actions can be seen as rebellious at first, but as time goes on, it is clear that there is hostility between his parents and himself that he does not want to face or try to fix. In a dysfunctional family, there are two extremes when it comes to the outcome of the children: the rebel or the conformist. Although the older child is typically the conformist and the younger child is the rebel, the McCandless family is a little different because both children are the rebels. Krakauer says, “Also like Chris, she clashed fiercely with Walt and Billie as an adolescent… [but] Carine made peace with her parents shortly after Chris disappeared” (129).…
