Ringworm is a fungal skin infection that is commonly mistaken for a parasitic infection.

There are several forms of ringworm depending which part of the body it effects. To name a few there is tinea pedia, which is commonly known as athlete’s foot, tinea cruris, which is commonly known as jock itch, and tinea barbae, which is a ringworm infection of the beard.

Despite the name ringworm, it actually is not actually caused by a worm or any kind of parasite. Ringworm is actually caused by one of three fungi T. rubrum, M. Canis, or T. tonsurans. Coming into close contact with any surface covered with one of these three fungi can cause a ringworm infection.
