I crept down the hall without seeing or hearing anyone and dropped the letter in the mail chute between the elevators. Then I returned to our suite, got back into bed, and slept more soundly than I had for a great many nights.” This shows how determined April is because she didn’t take no for an answer. Although it could’ve put her family in danger, she also knew that contacting her boyfriend was the right thing to do. She was more driven than ever just to get in touch with him so she used this passion to develop a plan and accomplish it. In The Last Star Ringer said, “I sighed. There was no breaking through. I didn’t blame her, though. If she told me, your father wasn’t an artist and a drunk: he was a teetotaling Baptist Minister, I wouldn’t believe her. Cogito ergo sum. The only refuge available was a bedroom, so I stalked into the closer of the two and slammed the door.” This shows how conceited April is because she is making a big scene out of a simple command. Her mother and brother are worrying about their dad and Jim is worried about keeping the whole family protected. April is only concerned about her boyfriend and talking to him, not about the condition in which her father is in. April also said, “I couldn’t stay shut away in the bedroom forever, but to walk back out without being begged to do so would just be the same as agreeing with Jim’s ultimatum. I couldn’t bear to do that when I was in the right. And I was in the right, no question about it. There was no way Jim, who had never even met Steve, could be a judge of whether or not he should be trusted.” This continues to show how vain April is because she is simply refusing to let her guard down and realize that Jim is right and she is wrong.
