With my elementary band students, I only use two types of assessment which are formative and summative. The formative assessments that I use in my classes are the weekly playing test. When we are learning a new song I map out the more difficult sections of the music and require my students to practice those sections and be able to perform them by the end of the week. This is an ongoing struggle because with students that are in elementary school they are not focused on being a great musician. It would be a miracle if they even touched their instruments outside of school.…

The unit I will be designing for my middle school general music class focuses on creating an original composition of music. The students will be working in peer groups to write original lyrics (two verses and one chorus), create a rhythmic “loop” using the application GarageBand on their laptops, and create a music video using their final original song. This unit will relate to many of the National Music Standards, and the students will have choice and will incorporate the use of technology, group work, and performance. For this unit, the assessment format I feel will be most practical to utilize is the “performance-based format” listed by author Larry Ainsworth in Rigorous Curriculum Design (2010, p. 138).…

In the wake of outlining this assessment and clarifying the importance of it to the students, I'll let them know that there were four specific things that I was evaluating amid this activity. The rubric for the task has four key things that I am utilizing to judge students execution, which depended on their parts. One, the part of the researcher. Did they keep the group on undertaking, offer the group some assistance with understanding the document, did they give foundation information of said document, and so on. Two, the part of the summarizer.…
