Theme is a central message in a literary piece. It’s usually a generalization or a statement about a moral or lesson. It could also be a central idea in stories. The theme in Rudyard Kipling's short story, “ Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”, is the bigger person doesn’t always win. I chose the bigger person doesn’t always win because it explains that no matter what size you are you can accomplish anything. Although, I think that good versus evil could also be a theme based on this story, I will admit that other people do have different views or themes based on how they think and what their backgrounds are.
The theme the bigger person doesn’t always win is very apparent in this story. Rikki was horrified …show more content…
We know that throughout the story the snakes feared Rikki. Nag feared Rikki because he knows he can tear him apart. Nag stated,“ He knew that mongooses in the garden meant death sooner or later for him and his family.” When Rikki kills Nag Nagaina doesn’t have a “puppet” to do her filthy work. I bet that that makes her feel like she isn’t on top of the world any more because she has to face Rikki alone. Nagaina says to Darzee, “You warned Rikki-tikki when I would have killed him. Indeed and truly, you’ve chosen a bad place to be lame in.” Nagaina states this to Darzee because it shows that she is now afraid of facing Rikki alone. Nagina begins to make her own plan because she knows she can not take on Rikki so she has to threaten the family. Even Nagaina large size makes it impossible because of Rikki’s bravery. HAHA, Rikki steals one of her babies and is going to destroy it if she doesn’t get away from his family. Rikki-Tikki has already used his plan of taking her egg and making it a hostage. When Nagaina sees Rikki with her egg she forgets about the boy and just wants her egg back. We know this because she says, “Ah-h! Give it to me,” “Give me the egg, Rikki-tikki. Give me the last of my eggs, and I will go away and never comeback.” All these examples show how Nagaina fears Rikki in some way. My theme for this story is the bigger person doesn’t always win, I can connect this to my life by beating my older …show more content…
evil, I chose good vs. evil because I wanted to show about the good and the evil in this story. Rikki saves and helps everybody when they need it. To prove this, Rikki directly said, “The boy is safe, and it was I-I-I that caught Nag by the hood last night in the bathroom.” That shows Rikki did save and help someone. Nagaina is greedy and sneaks around with Nag who does all her work. Nagaina says in the story, “He will have to go away, and then the garden will be our own again. Go in quietly, and remember that the big man, who killed karait, is the first one to bite. Then come out and tell me, and we will hunt for Rikki-tikki together.” This quote shows that Nagaina is being evil by making her husband do all of the
