Right to work laws have been controversial since the day they where created. Right-to-work laws give workers the options of whether or not they want to join a union and pay dues to have a union member fight for equal wages, fair treatment, and many other worker rights. In right to work states it is an individual's right to join or not join a union without discrimination. Half of the state through out the United States are right-to-work states, therefore America seems to be dived on this issue. I will discuss in right-to-work laws and view both sides. I will also review how right-to-work laws began and how they have evolved.

This allowed companies to have to the choice to allow unions but did not force workers to join a union. In 1947 the Taft-Harley Act was created due to multiple strikes hurting the economy. The act was created in the purpose to give the employer the right to the first amendment, freedom of speech. This allowed the employer to voice their own views on unionization. The Taft-Harley act also made closed shop illegal, requiring employees to be members of the union. This allowed for right-to-work laws to come into place and for states to right to decide whether or not to allow agency shop, or union shop. People have the right to choose to belong to a union or not. For example if you start a job that belongs to a union you then have to join the union to keep a job. With right-to-work law you can join unions on your own will. It can lower schools taxes because there are lesser teacher unions and in return the property owner also pays less on homeowner taxes and property taxes. In right-to-work state the power of the union is not as strong, they can no longer take dues, employees can negotiate on their own behalf.
On the flipside there are also many cons to the right-to-work law. Many people whom are against right to work laws are opposed because the downfall of union membership. Membership for the union was at its highest point around the 70's the middle class flourished. The cons that can effect workers is no longer having someone to fight for better working conditions and higher salaries. Unions have been know for giving better healthcare cost to their workers. Also many right to work states in some polls show "unemployment rate is higher in state with RTW as well as higher percentages of fatal workplace
