A golden, whitish light pierces the grayish-teal sky as if it were thread weaving an intricate fabric. The sea flows into a liquid swirl of silvers, blues, and grays. This purposeful contrast between the dark, empty town and the rich, vibrant water and sky adds to the photograph’s unusual perspective, making it seem as if the viewer were looking at human civilization through the eyes of someone more sympathetic to nature than the average technology-minded human being. The work suggests how completely the majesty of nature can overshadow many human accomplishments.…
Demanding more and more breakthroughs and advancements, humankind has given technology permission to drive nature away. The isolation that humanity succumbs to results in nature’s beauty vanishing in the blink of an eye. As Richard Louv argues, the changing culture of our world has resulted in glorifying technology and ignoring nature’s value. Where the accepted synthetic nature makes “true” nature irrelevant. Where looking out the car window rarely occurs; easily replaceable with a television screen on the back of mom’s seat.…
Throughout history many battles have been fought, in the front of the US, all for the need of utilities, but how did these battles help to form the United States the way it is now? WWII was the only war to be fought twice, giving it the name the second world war. World War II was one of the deadliest wars in history; being fought against the axis powers in 1939 through 1945. All the hardships that the United States had to get through really formed the way the United States is now. After the US won the war, with the help of the allied powers, the US change for the better; giving women more freedom, the economy came to a boom and racial discrimination diminished.…
When you visualize kids today, what do you picture? Do you see them frolicking outside with sunshine hitting their skin and imagination pumping through their veins? Or do you see them slouching on a sofa, glued to a bright screen, and with a glaze over their eyes? We often criticize those children on tablets and smartphones for not being outside much, but we are just as guilty of going outdoors less ourselves. In Florence Williams’ The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative, she takes a look at the effects nature has upon us.…
If you think about each and every aspect of the nature of our world, it is truly indescribable. Think about how many blades of grass there are just in a small field or how animals instinctually know how to survive and work together. The world around us is extraordinary, but, unfortunately, in today’s society, most of us do not even bother to look up and take it in. We are all too self-absorbed and will not even take the time to put down our technology and appreciate the scenery outside. One day during the pouring rain, I took the time to sit by a window and observe the raindrops glide down my window and the squirrels run to take shelter from the rain.…
Analysis: The preceding narrative is from a time in my life not too long ago. It reminds me of Walker Percy ’s essay The Loss of the Creature in the sense that things are not always as they appear to be. Percy’s thesis is one mustn’t blindly follow what we are taught, but rather, one must discover for himself what is genuine and true.…
There's a man walking closer to me wearing a gray t-shirt, blue jeans, and carrying a fishing pole. Is he coming up next to me to cast out or is he going to the opposite side? The area is small near the dam and it's hard to have two or three people casting because when you cast out the river carries your lure or bait down with it, causing you to possibly become tangled. Doe's he know that? The writer was taught to ask or go somewhere else if she noticed someone was fishing in a spot.…
The first mentions of the words ‘Taj Mahal’ caused images of pure white marble against clear blue skies to spring to my mind. After a quick Google search of the building, I anticipated expected my trip to act as an eye opener portraying the beauty of the Taj Mahal as representative of the true love of Shah Jahan towards his wife Mumtaz. When I arrived, I was sorely mistaken. I was surrounded by clouds accompanying a light drizzle of rain, hundreds of people packed together, and street children forcing Taj Mahal knickknacks in my face, trying to earn a few rupees. Reading Walker Percy…
Behavior Sunday in the park, by Bel kaufman, begins with a family enjoying a beautiful day at the park. Larry the little boy was minding his own business playing in the sandbox hardly even realizing that there was another boy in the sandbox. He shortly starts to notice him as the boy now starts to bully him by throwing sand in his face. Larry at this point seems as if he is going to cry and looks to get his mother’s attention. His mother tells the other child that what he is doing is not okay and it needs to stop.…
Richard Louv, writer of Last Child in the Woods, describes a situation in which looking out car windows has become a thing of the past. Louv’s purpose is to encourage interaction between people and nature. He adopts a nostalgic tone in order to influence readers to turn to nature instead of turning to technology. At the beginning of the excerpt, we, the reader, is introduced to a study where it has become possible to genetically influence nature. This study led to Matt Richtel having the idea to basically stamp advertisements on nature.…
To experience nature when all you know is civilization is to learn something new about your world and more importantly how it can make you new again. Cheryl Strayed, the author of the autobiography Wild, decided to embark on what she believed could be her life renewing opportunity. Cheryl's life had fallen apart before her eyes and taking a leap of faith, she hoped that not only did she have the power to hike alone the life threatening Pacific Coast Trail, but also that nature was strong enough to erase the atrocities she had endured. Nature has the ever so desirable ability to rid your life of modern things that creates negative distractions and make things new. Nature is the oldest, purest, and most natural thing in existence and is the basis to all things we have today.…
Today was another surreal one. The hike up to Panorama Ridge saw the vegetation get thinner and thinner until there was nothing but lichen, the only plant that had the attitude to face the altitude. At some point on the ascent, every fully-grown tree became shorter than me, and I knew that I hadn't experienced something like this ever before. I found the everyday use of the word “free” (costing no money) to not apply on this hike. This experience may not have cost me money but it was not free - it cost me most of my body and mind’s will.…
Me. Colorado. Mountains. Skiing. 12,510 feet. Nothing brings more enthusiasm than knowing you’re about to be carried over two miles in elevation by a rickety bench hanging from a cable, only to slide all the way down on a couple narrow strips of plastic.…
It was a hot and humid night in Livingston Parish, Louisiana in the middle of October. My dad, mom, brother, and I were inching our way down the road towards the fairgrounds. The traffic was backed up for at least two miles and my brother and I were restless. At just 9 and 12 we had visions of hot dogs and funnel cakes swimming through our minds, making us ask consistently when we will be there. At almost nine o’clock we finally pull up onto the makeshift dirt driveway heading into the massive parking lot, which was really only a field.…
Botanical Garden Observations On this Wednesday evening at 1800 on October 05, 2016 I am at one of the most prestigious popular hotels on the Las Vegas, NV strip. I am at the botanical garden where a new world is created with flowers and other natural resources to create wonderment for the current season; each season is changed and every year is different. While inside the botanical gardens I first want to soak up my environment with my eyes closed; I can heighten my senses to the various sounds and smells and get a varying perspective on my area. Once I experience the area with my eyes closed for about ten minutes I then want to touch as much as I can and look around.…
