Rickets is a disease that can be developed if the body does not have the required amount of vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate. Rickets is most commonly found in children between the ages of six months and 24 months as this is a period of rapid growth. Although, the most common way to develop rickets is a poor diet not containing enough vitamin D, it is not the only way to develop the condition; rickets can be received as a genetic disorder. Children face the highest risk of developing rickets as they need more vitamin D to help absorb calcium and phosphate. Calcium and phosphate are essential to the growth and development of bones.
