To many people, spiders are terrifying. In fact, behind death and public speaking, arachnophobia, the fear of spiders, haunts fifty percent of women and sixteen percent of men (The Wall Street Journal). However, these usually small arachnids are highly underestimated in their capabilities. They are clever, industrious, and inventive, giving them the ability to thrive in many environments. Spiders spin their webs with silk, the strongest known natural fiber. They also have eight eyes, eight long legs, and many different tactics with which to catch their prey. While spiders may be widely feared, they are actually amazing creatures.
The same could be said of The University of Richmond’s Spiders. Although the University is a small, private liberal arts college, it has a secure and powerful foundation based on collaborative learning and research. Similar to a spider’s living environment, there is a strong web of alumni connections and students who are academically driven. The campus fosters a community where people are smart, motivated, and always looking to do something better. Like the spider with its eight legs, the students are fast moving with many opportunities to go in different directions and explore different avenues of study. For me,

They are always ready to absorb more knowledge and challenge themselves academically. In my life, I have always chosen to take higher level classes when they were available. As a result, I have been fortunate to find my courses engaging and relevant. This is something I hope to continue at the University of Richmond, surrounded by people who share these goals. I have found that it is not enough to merely take these courses, but it is important to take them with people who motivate you to work harder. As a Richmond Spider, I believe I will find these people, and I am looking forward to joining the web of Richmond

Water is the enderman's only weakness, so if you find one on your tail, swim away! Two kinds of spiders inhabit the Minecraft world. Cave spiders burn in daylight, while regular spiders can get you regardless of the time of day. Spiders poison you with damage over time and can climb your walls if you neglect to build an overhang. Kill a spider and be rewarded with string you can use for making a bow; spiders are easily killed by a gold or iron sword, as they are not very "healthy" creatures.…

When the class becomes challenging, it allows the student to go more in depth in whatever research, reading, or critical thinking they need to do in order to get the highest grades. It is almost like a video game approach, the majority of children would not play a videogame that never progresses and always stays as easy as level one, however, once a student shows they are capable, more challenges can be given to them. In order to help keep the students in school who may not be able to handle the challenge, it is important to have “relationships with teachers and counselors who believe and support them [because it is] a determining factor in remaining in school” (60). This is also part of the “payoff” that students receive when succeeding. The students receive support by the counselors and teachers that they may not be receiving at home.…

In a place where media is as mainstream as reading, is there a decline of intelligence? Is there even plausible proof to deterioration of American intelligence? Mark Edmundson, author of “Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here,” and William Chace, author of “A Question of Honor,” both give their reasoning to this decay of intelligence. Both Edmundson and Chace examine the ways in which colleges and universities play a key role in the problem of “anti-intellectualism” in America. Mark Edmundson informs his readers of his beliefs that college is only the beginning.…

I’ve never been in a situation where there are more classes I want to take than time I have to take them. It’s hard to believe that I’ve finally found a place to truly explore after being told for years that I need to plan my career beforehand. In high school I was lucky enough to somehow pick up an interest in learning, something that doesn’t seem adequately encouraged in public secondary schooling. The subjects I found myself interested in were vast and varied, almost to a fault. This left me with increasingly dwindling attention to my common core classes, specifically math and some science classes.…

Honors committee, As long as I can remember I have sought challenges in academics. Until only recently I didn't know why I pushed myself as hard as I have in school, but now I understand it is because I truly love learning. For me, discovering something new or unknown, teaching myself a new skill, or learning more about the world around me is one of the most gratifying things in my life. This is part of why I think I should be admitted into the honors program here at the University of Iowa. As a young child I was insatiably curious, asking my mother questions ad nausea, never satisfied with simple answers.…

Education Majors Teachers have the ability to educate, challenge, and expand the minds of children who will shape and refine the world’s future. They inspire students to become scientists who may discover a cure for cancer, doctors that will save lives, or athletes who will break records. Children depend on teachers to provide them with every opportunity to become great, which is why earning a teaching certificate should not be an easy process. Today, one has to pass the Praxis test, obtain a 3.0 GPA, and complete the assigned college courses to earn a teaching certificate. Due to these simple requirements, unqualified college graduates are becoming ineffective teachers that are failing to assist their students in the right direction.…
