Richard Machalek Summary

Decent Essays
Richard Machalek focuses on the psychology and social behavior of hunters of the Pleistocene era to modern day sportsman. Machalek’s thought is that people hunt because it is a natural instinct because for thousands of years humans have been predators in nature. He also brings the fact that humans do not always hunt because they are looking for food, but often times they hunt other predators to protect themselves, families and livelihoods. He states that the reasoning behind why people enjoy hunting especially other predators is because of the thrill of high risk high reward scenario. He also discusses why it is much more prominent in men to hunt rather than women saying he believes it is because of social esteem and reproductive opportunities

As man became a hunter, and skilled with weapons, he began to kill animals and other people in large quantities. This was probably due to land ownership disputes and the need of the certain land or animal. Big game animals were all but killed off in the few short years after the invention of hunting, except in areas that were beneficial to the hunted. In place of the hunted animals, the need for another source of food was predominant.…

In Jean Hatzfeld’s Machete Season, he interviewed perpetrators from the Rwandan genocide, where the Hutus tried to exterminate the Tutsis. The Tutsis were the minority and had always been higher in social class compared to the Hutus. The Hutus were not fond of this. The Rwandan genocide was one of the most unorganized genocides where instead of designated killing squads like the Einsatzgruppen in the holocaust, it was all of the Tutsi’s neighbors that were coming to kill them. Although, every mass killing needs some form of infrastructure.…

Back when hunting was done for survival, it became important and it was the reason you lived. It wasn’t fun, it was necessary. Now, hunting that’s for fun, shows kids blood and violence, not how to value life. I think that it’s important that kids know where meat comes from, but they don’t need to be the one pulling the trigger. Some people nowadays love hunting just for the killing and blood.…

George Muller is an amazing man of prayer, Especially in this book. My favorite excerpt from this book would be in chapter 8 when Muller prays and prays about making the first orphan house, then on December 5 he was praying and got a scripture for the Orphans. After those two days on December 7 he got his first shilling (which isn’t even a dollar in today's money) for the orphan house. Then ,two more days later, he got donations of clothes and furniture for the orphanage. This showing how good God was listening.…

Mervyn Peak once said “Civilized people don’t feel.” In the short story, “The most dangerous game” by Richard Connell, Connell writes of a man who is a great hunter with a low attention span. The hunter’s name is Zaroff, but instead of hunting animals he “hunts” men. Rainsford, a skilled hunter also, finds himself in Zaroff’s cruel game. In the beginning, Rainsford could never fathom the idea of a man killing a man.…

Hunting has been around since the dawn of time. Having transformed from a vital means of survival to a sporting activity, people have long debated both sides of the issue. While some view hunting as a righteous action, others despise the deed. The argument for hunting as an admirable or distasteful act is still relevant to present society. As seen in the writings of Rick Bass and Robert G. Schreiner through many comparisons and differences, imagery, deeper meanings, stances, and views, the debate of hunting is a controversial matter.…

For some it is a cultural tradition. Some would say men feel as though, they need to show-off their inferior social status because of how costly it is to hunt. Trophy hunting also is a way for men to show to potential mates that they can provide (Khan). A professor at the University of Victoria in British Columbia “described humans as ‘superpredators’ who don’t follow the typical rules of other carnivores in the animal kingdom-which can have devastating consequences for wildlife populations”(Khan). Some could argue that gender roles would be a factor in why people like to trophy hunt.…
