In this passage the author’s attitude is grotesque and humorous towards what’s revolving around him. In the first sentence you can already predict his feelings towards the funeral. To him it’s more comic than sad.
The author’s diction in “the funeral” expresses major factors of sarcasm as well as the arrogance and superiorly towards the lower social class (the funeral wasn’t a tragedy but more of a “serious comedy”. He would describe the people as insects as he used the word “manifestation”.) A funeral isn’t supposed to be vigorous but he stated it as “the finest of the year”. In the second sentence he’s stating his occasion of being in the funeral. The author describes the people as “dregs” as not important sediments.
