Tattoos Do Not Define You Going to work everyday should not be like going to school was, you should not be judged for what you wear, how you look, and the tattoos and piercings you decided to get. It is your body, so you should be aloud to do whatever you want to with it. Many older people are not used to people having tattoos or piercing. For the people who have those things it may be harder for them to get a job. The two articles use many similar rhetorical tools to reinforce their opinion that work culture is a key reason for the leaving of female engineers. Both articles reference a survey of women who earned engineering degrees conducted by Nadya Fouad to support. They provide some responses from the survey to make for an appeal and utilize statistics as evidence like “For the past two decades, 20 percent of engineering graduates have been women, yet only 11 percent of practicing engineers are women” (Fleur, 2014) to make their words more convincing. Schulte’s article also references the American Association of University report “women make up about 12 percent of engineering professors, one of the lowest percentages in all STEM fields, where women…

Is there a difference between men having tattoos in the workforce compared to women? Men are seen more as a punk rock kind of life style where women are not, so if you are going to be a wild woman a lot of the social norms would like to see you as lady like in the streets and visible tattoos make that impossible in some eyes. Despite what people say the main reason people do not get hired in the workforce because of body art is usually due to the location. If a man has a neck tattoo he is more than likely not going to get hired but if a women has one she might get hired because she can cover it up with long…

“ In the Harris Interactive poll, 27% of the respondents without tattoos said folks with tattoos are less intelligent, and half said they’re more rebellious”(McMullen). I think that just because some people have tattoos and seem to be less intelligent or more rebellious doesn't mean that all people with tattoos are, even people without tattoos are less intelligent and can be more rebellious that tattoo doesn't determine your personality. “ In a 2011 CareerBuilder Poll, 31% of nearly 3,000 hiring managers said they would be less likely to promote someone with a visible tattoo, and 37% said the same for piercings”(McMullen). Employers cannot determine if a person is qualified for a job just by looking at them. So many occupations want a person to cover their tattoo if it is visible, such as policemen, nurses or teachers. However, if the company has interviewed the prospective employee, and knows that the person is highly educated and suited for the job, but still does not hire them just because of their tattoo; someone else could come along that does not have a tattoo, but is less experienced than the person who did have the tattoo. Therefore, the supervisor overlooked a well trained and knowledgeable person because he or she had a tattoo. Employers often think they already know what type of person it is when someone walks into their office with tattoos, but really they can’t tell until they get to know the person.…

Artists now have a living, moving canvas on which to display their talents, and to call this artwork harmful, savage mutilation is to denounce the time, precision, and effort put into such masterpieces. Body modifications express individuality and create lasting memories for those upon whom they appear. They have been around since ancient tribes roamed the land, and they have progressed from a ritualistic tradition to a condemned taboo and back into the everyday lives of modern society. Tattoos and piercings are unique alterations to oneself that provide people with the opportunity to display pieces of themselves in a visible, tangible manner. It is time for the rest of society to accept their normality and judge people based on actions and words rather than…
