In May 2007 Former President of Purdue University, Martin C. Jischke presented his last commencement speech as president, The American Dream, to the Purdue class of 2007. A sense of passion and immense pride permeated his speech, resulting in a zealous delivery and rallying spirit. His purpose? To impart one final lesson onto his students; his own definition of the American Dream, and why he thought them so capable of achieving it. Throughout his speech, Jischke employs a vast variety of rhetorical devices in an attempt to connect with his audience. He does through plying his listeners with pathos, ethos, and logos. To have his message carry any kind of importance, the audience first needs to know why they should care. Why they should care
