Fredrick Douglass’s motivational passage “Learning to Read” reinforces the fact that everything is possible. No matter weather you believe the statement to be true, this message states that no matter the condition, if you set one’s mind to it, it can be accomplished. For example, as a slave, reading and writing is not a privilege that everyday people, such as you and I, get to experience. During this time, slaves reading and writing was comparable to attempting to murder someone now days. This was a “crime” to learn, read, write or challenge the right at a formal education was punishable in some of the worst ways. However, for this individual slave, he was driven to learning how to read, and eventually learning to write. With any type of education

Those who preach against theft stole the earnings of a hardworking slave and those who preached against abuse and rape were the ones who committed the crime.     Frederick Douglass and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were both very active abolitionists. These two wrote very good, informative speeches that are important in history. Douglass spoke about his experiences, and his thoughts and beliefs on slavery in his speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” In a speech titled, “Declaration of Sentiments” Stanton wrote about how wrong society was on the topic of women’s rights in a very enticing manner, using the Declaration of Independence as a way of making her speech more credible.     Furthermore, education among slaves became a privilege never granted to those enslaved, but to those who were white and free, contradicting slaves and any form of knowledge. Douglass therefore figured that he would never escape the predetermined life or fate he possessed.
