Beyoncé’s “Formation” has many interesting and strange aspects that may not be noticed right away. Some strange ideas include how she emphasizes individual work in her lyrics, but shows group work in her music video. The lyrics also convey that you must work to earn everything you get while the music video shows all the luxuries with no work involved. However, both convey a message about equality between gender and race. This is one reason it should be analyzed because it can contradict itself and convey different messages for different people.

In Beyonce’s music video, the viewers are taken on a time travel through New Orleans when it had the largest population of free African Americans. A few scenes that pictured Beyoncé on top of a floating cop car and a little boy dancing in front of riot control cops highlighted the clear difference between white authority and the local blacks. The scenes emphasize that the local blacks just want to live in a world without fear or inequality. However, it must be noted that the time travel pictures many scenes of African Americans in high end clothing and high end places. For example, one scene pictures Beyoncé with five other women sitting in a fancy living room, fanning themselves in glorious dresses. Along with that scene, Beyoncé is pictured dancing in a formal hallway in a velvet red outfit, jewelry on, and her hair is nicely done. Some may think that these details make society look as women from the outside and not value what they aspire to be.
