In 1910, the 26th president of the United States Theodore Roosevelt gave his speech Citizenship In A Republic to the University of Sorbonne in Paris, France (Ziegler). At the time, he went on a tour in Europe to deliver his Nobel peace prize speech and put forward the doctrine of new nationalism. France, however, had just had a flood and was suffering through devastation it had left. That is where the kairos come in. The purpose of the speech was to spread his belief that success of a nation relied on its people and their individual progress and work. Ethos is found in the quote: "Today I shall speak to you on the subject of individual citizenship, the one subject of vital importance to you, my hearers, and to me and my countrymen because you and we are great citizens of great democratic republics. A democratic republic such as ours - an effort to realize its full sense government by, of, and for the people" (Reich), He uses patriotism to express ethos by convincing everyman they’re great citizens of the republic. Secondly, Logos is portrayed through class warfare. In the quote: “A race must be strong, and vigorous; full of good fighters and breeders else its wisdom will come to naught and its virtue ineffective”(Reich). The quote is stating logic. Without a tough, strong nation, America wouldn't be anything but weak. Thirdly, Roosevelt uses Pathos to convey inequality. “Let us try to level up, but let us beware of the evil of leveling down. If a man stumbles, it is a good thing to help him to his feet. Every one of us needs a helping hand now and then. But if a man lies down, it is a waste of time to try and carry him; and it is a very bad thing for everyone if we make men feel that the same reward will come to those who shirk their work and those who do it” (Reich).
