Based on research about the website, it is established that Motherjones is a very effective medium for conveying information of various issues. It features investigative and breaking news on categories found on the website including politics, environment human rights and culture. It also entertains photo essays and blogs. Considering the articles published on the website, it is observed that they are usually on provocative topics. The article portrays the high homicide rates in the affected urban cities, rates that are receding past the average level. It mentions the subdued residents of a relative small and silent neighborhood who do not provide a reliable witness network to help solve the crimes. This is escalated by the danger that comes with speaking up to the police. Despite the several measures taken to curb the situation, including but not limited to the ‘broken windows’ and the ‘stop-and-frisk’ policing models, curfews and peaceful negotiations, the crime rates have still experienced an incremental rise. The most colossal effect of these incidents is experienced by the family. The choice of language affects the emotion evoked in a reader for example; using words like “shot” and “killed” will elicit a much different reaction than if “lost” was used. It helps the audience to feel more strongly about the issue. Sympathy is observed when readers are reading just a brief of the story whereas empathy is achieved through giving some specific detail to enable the reader personify the incident, for example, by starting off the article with the happy afternoon Emill with his brothers, the readers, especially those with family, can easily assimilate and feel the emotion. The death of Emill was a pathetic one because of the incidents surrounding it; he was shot severally as he innocently walked to his car. The story is effective to the writer because it highlights one of the main points that expresses the inhuman way people are being killed like flies.
