Revolutions Of 1848

What sparked the chain reaction of revolutions in Europe? In the late 1800's, citizens of Europe were starting to feel the suffering that their government was placing on them. Food supplies were decreasing making it harder of people to feed their families, crops were getting difficult to produce. Merriman describes how even “the Irish were suffering from potato famine.” (Page 614) Unemployment skyrocketed as working conditions became harsh to be in, as well as sickness started to drift into the continent. Citizens and liberals wanted their monarchies to be overthrown. Socialist was occupied by "radical, reforms including universal male suffering and social reform to ameliorate the conditions of the laboring poor." (Page 614) Some European countries were experiences a series of revolution, one right after another. France was not the only country who is taking part of a revolution so was other parts of Europe. Germany was having more of a social status revolution between the Liberals the radicals. Even Italy was having revolutions happening. Italy was trying to break free from the Austrian monarchy twice. Italy failed both times to gain freedom.The reasons for failure for the Revolutions of 1848 was due to short term goals and the Conflicting ideas between the liberals and the radicals. Liberals wanted a republican government and the over through of monarchy society, but still keeping the beliefs, cultures and patriotism of their country. However, the radicals were involved in men's suffrage and the conditions that laborers were living in. With more than one philosophies floating within a nation no one could come to an agreement or have written a constitution to justify both
