Response Paper: Ch. 2 “Finding Our Way-The Experience of Education”
In the second chapter of the book, Why School? Reclaiming Education for All of Us, Mike Rose queries that we can learn from surroundings and we can make our lives spontaneously, so why we have to pay more attention to experience of education in the schoolhouse. His main point is the experience of education determines the way students perceive schooling, how to integrate into our lives and how to define ourselves. He also utilizes his past experience of education to explain. For instance, when Rose was young, he seemed to be devoid of interest in learning and feel disconnection between classroom and him due to a poor family situation. In most schools, memorization is mistaken for learning. Most of what is remembered is memorized only for short time, but quickly forgotten such as math. Moreover, teaching is importance in school, but there are many different ways of learning. For example, I love the way that professor teaches me when I studying Math 208. Because the way he teaches is he provides more opportunities to share what we think about and what we are learning with each other. In addition, he always gives us more incentive to become an explainer. As an explainer, we cannot get the matter to fit comfortably into our perspective, we also have to figure out how to link our point into other people ‘mind so that the explanation is make sense to them. That’s why I love this class so badly even though it is complicated for me. In college, when I study literature which is widened my knowledge of world, it allows to immerse myself into the imagined world and release my imagination to create my world. Reading and writing gave me skills how to organize, analyze and synthesize evidence, begin to make an assertion about my perspective in order to catch readers ‘eyes. Above all, the knowledge and the experience that you obtained from school not only bring you joy, but also gain the feeling of being knowledge.
