Jane is forced to live with her Aunt because both her mother and father have passed, causing her to be a subject of her aunts charity. Once in the room she is faced with her ghostly reflection she begins to contemplate on all the things she has done to deserve being there. While in the room she thinks back on her uncle and his wish that his wife treat Jane like she was on of their own. Abruptly she thinks that her kind hearted uncle, in spirit, is there in the red room to get revenge on his wife for breaking her promise. Brocklehurst provides the girls with starvation levels of food, freezing rooms, and poorly made clothing and shoes. He justifies his poor treatment of them by saying that they need to learn humility and by comparing them to the Christian martyrs, who also endured great hardships.Despite all of the hardships she faces at Lowood she would still rather be there than living with her Aunt. At Lowood she meets two girls in which she instantly bonds with, Miss Temple and Helen Burns.She learns a few things from both of the women: Miss Temple, Jane learns the proper ladylike behavior and compassion. Though Helen she gains more of a spiritual focus.
With the school 's damp conditions, and with the girls ' near-starvation eating habits,this produces a typhus epidemic, in which nearly half the students die, including Helen Burns, who died tragically in Jane 's arms. In effect of this hardship Brocklehurst is deposed from his position as manager of Lowood. Jane becomes a well known and appreciated student and teacher at Lowood. After Miss.Temple marries things are starting to feel different at Lowood and Jane feels as if its time to move
