The true story of Anne frank Affected me in many ways. The story of Anne for me was a story of happiness, depression, fear and Love. The story was also very sad especially at the end of the When the whole family dies except for Mr.Frank. This story was also very sad because of the setting and because what was going on during that time period. When Hitler was trying to find and kill all of the Jews to make his perfect race, and all of the jews had to hide and fear for their own lives every single day.…
Sarah Haley is a professor of UCLA who has a PHD in African American Studies. She is one of the few people on the planet who possesses such classification. As a young man Louie joined the Army Air Force and became a bomber for a B-24 Liberator. In 1943 when Louie’s plane and crew crashed in the Pacific Ocean while they were on a mission, he managed to keep himself alive for over a month with little to no provisions for the duration of his drifting at sea. After over a month and finally spotting land, Louie was captured by a Japanese ship that had spotted his raft and taken as a prisoner of war. Louie survived numerous prisoner of war camps despite relentless torture…
In the midst of a war, how people interact with others from different cultures or within their own, may be their making or breaking point. In the book Storming Heaven by Denise Giardina and in the movie Matewan, it is clear to see how the miners have conflicts with the coal company, the scabs, and with themselves, and how the miners unite within themselves and with the others. Each of these interactions, both bad and good, impact the fight for the miner’s basic human rights against the company men. The first three-quarters of the book are filled with conflict as people try to figure out what is going on, how to deal with their problems, and who their friends are.…
Legendary Foundation of Rome Republic vs. Historical Realities and Women. I will attempt to compare the legendary foundation of the republic of Rome described by Livy in a document called The Rape of Lucretia with the historical realities described in The History of Western Societies, a text book. I will also look at the structure of the Roman family and views on women. I will show that the description by Livy and the realities of Rome are very close and my hope is that you will be able to see how Livy’s myth could be plausible. I also hope that you will be able to see in my argument that women at this time were no more than a piece of property with minimal rights, but there was an aspect of respect as to the need for and devotion of women…
The Tragedy Paper Review The Tragedy Paper by Elizabeth LaBan tells riveting narratives alternating between two contrasting perspectives, Duncan’s experiences and Tim’s recollection. LaBan illustrates a relatable road to self-discovery through the eyes of Tim, a misfit. I was completely captivated by the story, LaBan meshed the two plotlines perfectly to make me want to continue reading. Throughout the book, Laban brings the reader along with Duncan Meade during his senior year at The Irving School. At school, Duncan encounters CDs from the outcast boy, Tim, that lived in his room the previous year.…
During the Civil War, a lot of people played different roles on both the Confederate and the Union sides of the war. There were spies who used their seductive powers to get information out of the officers and women who dressed up as men to be accepted as a soldier 's. The Civil War influenced much of society by beginning segregation, secession, and gave rights to slaves. According to the biography on her website, Karen Abbott is the New York Times bestselling author of Sin in the Second City, American Rose, and most recently, Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy. She has written for the New York Times Book Review, Wall Street Journal, Smithsonian magazine, Salon, and many other publications. Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy intrigues me by telling the stories of four young ladies in the Civil War.…

While reading passing part two, Irene's annoyance regarding Clare seems to disappear for some time. "It was that, partly, that has made me want to see other people. It just swooped down and changed everything. If it hadn't been for that, I'd have gone on to the end, never seeing any of you. "(pg 100) was the moment that I thought that maybe just maybe Irene and Clare would be friends again.…
Witness by Karen Hesse is the story of a small, rural Vermont town set in 1924, just when the Ku Klux Klan has arrived in their town and is taking power. The novel follows the stories of many of the town’s residents and how they are affected by the arrival of the Ku Klux Klan. One of these characters is Leanora Sutter, a twelve year old African-American girl. Leanora is one of the main victims of the Ku Klux Klan’s violence and it forces her to become an adult.…
Rebel Women (1910) is a compilation of short stories about different situations that suffragettes went through, providing the feminist point of view of the author in regards of society; a second edition of this book was published in 1915. The depiction of suffragettes from the inside and her personal point of view were key elements that Evelyn Sharp used to express her view about the general situation of women’s suffrage. I considered for this analysis some short stories that, in my opinion, depict the situation of suffragettes in terms of politics, law and social context: “The Woman at the Gate” “The prison while the sun shines” and “The black spot of constituency”. “The Woman at the Gate” is a short story in which we are presented a peaceful manifestation in front of the Gates of Saint Stephens’ House. In this story it can be appreciated the opinion of men about…
Secret History was written by Mary Hassal in a series of letters to her Uncle, who was the Vice-President of the United States. The letters are her observations of what life was like in the Caribbean and in particularly, they were about the nobility and the women in St. Domingue. The letters sent from Hassal to her Uncle appear to be letters that allow the government in the United States to keep track of what is going on in the Caribbean. Because of this, it can be inferred that she is a spy from the U.S. even though she may not know it. Her observations are about what life is like for the Creoles, and non-Creoles, the positions of women in society, and what life was like in the urban areas and in the rural areas.…
Shakespeare romanticizes revenge in the play Hamlet. However, he makes it clear that revenge is the most destructive to the person pursuing it, turning the victim into the villain and causing the loss of their identity. We see this Hamlet’s journey to avenge his…
As Sir Francis Bacon once said, "A man that studieth revenge keeps his own wounds green, which otherwise would heal and do well. " The quotation above proves Sir Francis Bacon’s beliefs that if one is constantly fixated on achieving revenge, it will never heal your own pain and misery. Human misery often creates sadness and leaves one stranded looking for answers. Through Hamlet, revenge and human misery are a recurring and dominant theme. Shakespeare introduces the audience to the corrupting evil of revenge when King Fortinbras, who a great rival, was slaughtered by King Hamlet in a sword battle.…
