Have you heard that schools that practice the zero tolerance policy, suspend black students at a rate three times greater than white students? What level of insanity is that? Retributive justice and restorative justice are classified as ways of solving conflicts in distinct ways. Restorative justice empowers students to resolve conflicts on their own and in small groups. Essentially, the idea is to bring students together in intimate groups to talk, ask questions, and air their grievances. In contrast, retributive justice is a theory of justice that considers punishments, if proportionate, to be the best response to a crime. According to the article named The Disturbing Reason Why Charter Schools May Have Higher Test Scores by Kristina Rizga it acknowledges “In a classroom setting, this translates into a belief that the smallest infractions, such as passing a note during class, is to be met with the immediate consequence, such as an “out-of-school-suspension.” This piece of evidence demonstrates that schools that utilize retributive justice take unnecessary and harmful actions against insignificant mistakes, these small infractions don't deserve major consequences like suspensions. This causes the learning environment to be a unsafe. In addition, a student named Latrell also mentioned in the article states that before their school switched to the restorative justice the school environment was very negative and a lot of times students were afraid to come to school because they knew they would be suspended for foolish actions. However, retributive justice seems to be torturing kids while restorative justice schools allows one to learn at a pace where subjects are understood by heart.
