Retirement Home Analysis

I have worked many service jobs throughout my life. Most of those times I worked with the elderly in nursing and retirement homes. I enjoy volunteering for these people because being able to connect and hear stories with people who have lived a much longer life than mine gives me purpose. My service at these homes was a different type of work than being at the forest preserve however, the help I bring the the people in their home is very important. This includes bringing dinner to the table, playing board games to past time, or even taking someone for a walk. I was able to connect with so many people and get close to them more then I ever could.

I had a great time volunteering for Trail Tenders at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. There, I was given the role of preparing administrative work for the second annual Dutch Oven Cook-Off event they had going on. Trail Tenders is an educational group that I had the honor of assisting them in making a community-gathering event successful. Trail Tenders first started in 1987 as an organization originally called the Oregon Trail Preservation Trust.…

There is a slide in our power point for chapter 2 and it says what it is I would like to say about this particular question; the slide discusses the roles and stigmas and the definition of both. In my opinion and from talking to others, it is a huge no-no when someone hurts and elderly person and people view hurting elderly in any way as a very inexcusable behavior. The role of management for an assisted living home should be about what is best for their patients and when what is best for them is the priority everything else will fall into place. During the filming the CEO of Emeritus Corporation was asked about some of the issues the company has faced and he stated about the poor health and mindset of the elderly population as the primary…

When considering housing for the elderly we must take into consideration exactly what their vital needs are. Most families will take their parents to live with them, but sometimes that’s not such a good idea. When considering this you must think about the type care they will need, does it offer some safe enough surroundings? Would they be ok by themselves or would they need a caregiver? How will it affect them taking them away from everything they have ever known, their home, their friends, life as they have always known it?…

For several years I volunteered at a nursing home following the passing of my grandmother. When I first began, I had no prior understanding of the culture of aging beyond my grandma and her friends. Through my experience talking with the residents and observing the facility, along with my studies in public health, I noticed many gaps in the care of the elderly, both in the health care system as well as socially. Multi-generational homes are becoming increasingly more common as aging individuals may need access to caregivers, such as family members, to help with their chronic conditions and disabilities. In someways this may help a family financially as this would eliminate the cost of a nursing facility, however the burden of providing care to a disabled family-member can be very stressful.…

I learned a lot about patience and understanding, empathy and compassion, and communication and kindness. Meeting with people in some of their lowest points in life has encouraged me to continue my pursuit of a medical career, but has impact the way that I meet and connect with people. I can honestly say that this opportunity has allowed me to witness first-hand the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover," and it has allowed me to practice what is meant by the saying. Each person I met had a unique story to tell and it was often well worth the time spent…

I currently volunteer at Country Manor Nursing Home, St. Cloud Hospital, and St. Francis Xavier Church. I have always felt compelled to give back and what better way than through volunteering. Spending time with the elderly, fills my soul. To be able to give them the gift of time is rewarding, especially knowing that many are unable to see their grandchildren as often as they would like. Volunteering at the St. Cloud Hospital is something I really enjoy because I am able to help out in a medical scene and complete tasks that help support the medical team.…

    Community Service

My parents raised me to be aware of my surroundings, to always be of service to those who ask, but most importantly to be of service without being asked. Being raised this way made me a spontaneous volunteer, and though I have participated in organized volunteering, much of the volunteer work I do is doing things such as making snowmen one minute and the next minute shoveling a neighbor’s driveway for fun. Another time, a man came down our street collecting bottles for money, and after finding out that he came every Tuesday, I networked with the neighbors and assembled all of theirs as well for him to pick up. As for more formal volunteer work, I have often worked with various conferences, church events, family camps, the community in which…

I’ve always been willing to take a leadership role and volunteer, although often outside of the Gull Lake school district 's boundaries. My freshman and sophomore years I was captain of a club swim team located in Plainwell, a team that I had competed within since the beginning of middle school. I took pride in taking the younger, newer athletes under my wing, helping them grow a love for an intense and all consuming sport mentally and physically. Prior to freshman year I volunteered at a restaurant and campground in Marshall because I felt like I needed something productive to do in my spare time over summer break.…
