Ayn Rand once said, “If one doesn’t respect oneself, one can have neither love nor respect for others.” Regarding this statement, what exactly is respect? Respect supplies me, as well as others, with a sense of security and equality among all people. When you respect someone, it shows you have regard for them and people like myself, uphold this with attentiveness. We as humans desire to be cared for no matter how contradictory we may attempt to be of our nature. We crave human interaction and to be considered of value in the eyes of others. Personally, I strongly believe in the respectful treatment of all people, and I expect others to have a general consideration for me. Undoubtedly not all people can live up to my “unattainable” expectation of mankind. On the other hand, I don’t believe this is too problematic and I certainly don’t believe it to be impossible. I do agree that a certain respect is earned, but the type that demands the equal treatment of the multitude should be automatically publicized. One shouldn’t have to earn respect to be treated with value. Every human life is precious and everyone should take the time to recognize this. We should volunteer to lift our fellow brothers and sisters up when they’ve been kicked down, cleanse their wounds, and show them a mutual respect. Because the way we treat that person will either make a positive or negative impact on their life; the choice is all

The social construct of respectability in contemporary America is one that is focused on the increased value of time. As long-term growth and achievement take a back seat to short-term returns in the new capitalism, time becomes more valuable. Consequently, organizations have adapted and stability for workers has diminished. Relationships between employees and the companies that employ them have shifted from one that is based on mutual respect through mutual dependency to one in which past experiences merit less and respect must be earned in the present. The struggle to achieve respectability is now constrained by a time frame that depreciates skill and emphasizes potential ability.…
