The American Dream in the 1980’s Research Paper
Most, if not all people want to be successful today, and that wasn’t any different around 30 years ago. People in the 80’s wanted to achieve success by working hard towards their goals, or at least, that’s what my grandmother, Linda Patterson, believes. The 1980’s was a vastly different time from today, it had different strengths and weaknesses, different technology, and different models of society. In the subject of social, economic and political matters, the American Dream in the 1980’s was living a fashionable lifestyle and having a well-paying job, while still being young.

Ronald Reagan, the president of the time, decided to enlist a new policy for the economy “...which called for widespread tax cuts, decreased social spending, increased military spending and the deregulation of domestic markets.” (Reaganomics). This affected the American Dream by helping to fix the economy for the people, giving them even more hope, and increasing their work-ethic even more.Another way Reaganomics affected the American Dream was that it made it easier to do a lot of things, by cutting back on taxes, letting the people have more, and the deregulation of airlines. This made the airlines compete, which lowered their prices. Lowering prices allowed people to be able to travel more, which is a part of a more fashionable lifestyle. Reaganomics did what seemed to be good for the people, like cutting taxes, but not everything is as it seems to be. The government ended up suffering terribly because of what Reaganomics did to the flow of money, because “The federal debt almost tripled, from $997 billion in 1981 to $2.857 trillion in 1989.” (Amadeo) This affected the American Dream by telling the nation to contribute even more to the economy, so the government can pay off the …show more content…
