Tetralogy of Fallot is a condition caused by a combination of four heart defects that are present at birth. The defects affect the structure of the heart, caused by poor blood flow out of the heart and to the rest of the body. When affected babies cry or have a bowel movement they may turn blue, have a hard time breathing, become limp, and occasionally lose consciousness. The skin, lips, and mucous membranes inside the mouth and nose turn dark blue. Some infants with severe obstruction of the ventricle outflow turn blue at birth.
Tetralogy of Fallot is diagnosed during infancy or after. It’s may not be detected until later in life depending on the defects and symptoms. Tetralogy of Fallot treatment is open heart surgery with an early diagnosis.
