Here in America, most foods have an immense abundance of salt — in fact, most foods contain too much salt and sodium. Fast food, processed food, and salty snacks are all parts of numerous diets; sending thousands of milligrams of extra sodium into people’s bodies. Today, salts are used in processed foods as preservatives, taste enhancers, and even flavor enhancers. The United States Food and Drug Administrations recommends that people should not consume any more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. However, the average intake is 3,400 milligrams per day due to the vast amounts of salts and sodium added into processed foods (Pineo, 2015). Fortunately, a new salt has been created that contains 35% less salt than regular salt — Saltwell. Saltwell is a new salt produced by Salinity, a company based in Halmstad, Sweden, for organic use that contains 35% less sodium that regular salts. The salt is composed of 65% sodium chloride and 30% potassium chloride. Additionally, it is an “organic-certified rice hull concentrate” that can be used as an anti-caking agent. According to Salinity, it has received positive reviews in terms of taste, structure and process handling. The difference between Saltwell and other blended solutions that provide sodium reduction is that it doesn’t taste harsh and bitter when applied to foods.
