Hurricanes are one of the most dangerous natural hazards to people and the environment. These storms can cause great damage in less than a week and can cause terrible financial difficulties after! A hurricane is just a huge rotating storm centered around an area of very low pressure with strong winds that can exceed 74 miles per hour. Hurricanes use simple air convection to turn wind into a destructive device. A hurricane is formed only over warm waters near the equator. Tropical cyclones are like giant motors that use moist air as fuel, thus their reason for forming over warm ocean waters near the equator. Hurricanes use convection, the movement of hot and cold air to create monstrous storms.They begin formation by using hot humid air that rises to the top of the storm.As the air moves closer to the top it cools and condenses.When the water vapor condenses, it generates rain as well as heat.This cooling makes the air fall back down towards the bottom of the storm,where it warms and the cycle starts again.
