The prosecution had mainly circumstantial evidence along with one piece of physical evidence in linking Peterson to this murder. Circumstantial evidence is evidence that a judge or jury can infer upon…
Introduction Over the years, much has been done in order to improve law enforcement decision making. As a result, evidence-based policing was developed. Evidence-based policing (EBP) is defined as "the use of the best available research on the outcomes of police work to implement guidelines and evaluate agencies, units, and officers"(Schmalleger, 2015). This means that there is research being conducted about police procedures in order to allow police officers to better understand what they are doing right and wrong, which then leads to more effective police work. In other words, evidence-based policing uses research into everyday police procedures to evaluate current practices and to guide officers in future decision making (Schmalleger, 2015).…
This article focuses primarily on what Intelligence-Led policing is. Originating in the UK, the intelligence-led policing concept has its foundations in recognizing that police were spending too much time responding to crime and too little time targeting offenders. In 1993, the Audit Commission advocated for an increased use of intelligence, surveillance and informants to target major offenders so that police could be more effective in fighting crime rather than responding to it. Intelligence-led policing is philosophically close to several other crime fighting philosophies: Problem-Oriented Policing; However, where problem-oriented policing is a bottom-up philosophy that places street-level police officers at the forefront of problem identification…
The importance of the constitution has been questioned recently by African Americans football players who have decided to take a knee during the national anthem at the beginning of the NFL football games. In reality, no one knows the experiences of a person of color. We all know there have been many incidents between police officers and African American males that have resulted in fatalities. We need to investigate whether race was an issue in these police-based shootings.…
The article Police Blotters explains how a 13-year-old boy by the name of James Pooler was committed to the House of Refugee by his father. In addition to this, a 14-year-old boy who was committed for stealing lead from the Bell Telephone Company. This is a similar type of dilemma occurring in the world today with many African Americans being brutalized by police officers. In this particular article stealing lead was not an unusual act. This same article also reported how “Bull” McCarhty who was a well-known fighter was arrested for the same crime.…
Evidence Interpretation Over the years, there have been several cases that have been resolved with a false guilty plea or cases where a guilty party was not convicted of a crime. There are various elements that play a role in solving cases; evidence is a one of these key elements. Many factors can determine if the evidence submitted before a court of law is accurate such as how the evidence is collected, if proper protocell was followed before the laboratory’s handling of the evidence, and if the evidences was accurately processed by the crime scene laboratory by various forensic scientists. Furthermore, with the advances in technology in today’s society, various pieces of evidence such a DNA analysis have been considered a crucial element…
Community oriented policing is used by police stations to both improve relations with neighboring communities and improve crime prevention. An example of this would be a neighborhood watch, which officers and community members would walk the town to prevent crime and disorder. Between weaponry and rank structure our police do seem to look a lot like a military. The rank structure of the military allows for easy disimination of information and helps leadership incharge of large numbers, manage those persons easier, so its not hard to see why the rank structures are similar. Though local police use smaller arms such as pistols, larger cities have a much higher potential for riots and higher level crime.…
Minorities are often targeted by biased-based policing to “get the numbers”. Data compiled by Jeffrey Fagan shows that African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to be stopped and searched. Fagan found that approximately 1.6 million pedestrians were stopped and questioned by NYPD officers during 2010-2012. Furthermore, 52 percent of people stopped were African American, 32 percent were Hispanics, the other 16 percent accounts for whites and other races. Furthermore, data compiled by the task force dating from October 2013- May 2014 shows that Connecticut police made about 370.000 traffic stops during this time period.…
It’s being broadcasted by the media in today’s society, that police officers are killing Black American males and females, due to the color of their skin. I am a Caucasian police officer in a community that is predominately Black American. I take retribution daily because of the media’s portrait of law enforcement’s officer involved shootings with Black American suspects. Most Caucasian officers have faced the same retribution in their societies. The media does not look at the statistics of officer involved shootings.…
Most of the testimonies in this case are regarding the material evidence,…
Police Brutality Police brutality is unnecessary force used by the Police when dealing with civilians. The most form of police brutality is a physical form. "Police have been ordered to use pain compliance otherwise known as torture"(Watson 1). "In the 1633 term savage cruelty was used. The first known term in 1893 in the New York Times was police brutality.…
The fact is new technology affected a great relationship that was built throughout the years with police officers and citizens within the community. The police no longer walked the streets in the neighborhood, instead they road by in their patrol cars with their windows rolled up and told citizens to call the police for service and promised a rapid response upon receiving their call. (Police: History-Policing Twentieth Century America^ C” the Reform Era, (n.d.) It is now the 20th Century and policing today is almost the same as it was in the 1900s, when new technology surfaced, two-way radios, patrol cars and telephones made a major impact on how policing would be done in the years to come.…
Police officers need to know how to work in a decision-making process whether and whom to arrest or if both parties need to be arrested. The first thing police officers should do in a domestic violence case, is to understand the significance of the offense. Sometimes police officers have to do a dual arrest, due to victims are the ones who uses a physical aggression supposedly as a self-defense. Is up to the police officers to make a discretionary decision on a domestic violence case. The video said that it depends on the State, where an arrest is preferred, or in some occasions while in a jurisdiction law, the arrest is mandatory when there’s evidence of physical injury.…
In the Frontline documentary Policing the Police, writer and historian Jelani Cobb investigates the problems facing the Newark Police department. The film specifically follows the gang unit whose main focus is getting guns off the street. In the background Cobb explains what he is witnessing and what he’s learning from it. Cobb explains how the police can only stop people with legal justification, but 75% of the time there was no legal justification. There is no trust between the members of society and the police and vice versa.…
Based on the research done by Randall G. Sheldon, he discussed that his good – support theory which suggested that those who are against corruption indulge only with those who follow the conduct of the department have been blindly ignored (Sheldon, 96). As a result, many departments’ have forgotten their role as law enforcement officers. Gandhi proclaimed that if we removed the cause of the disease (the corruption) the result would remove the disease from the land. However, today police corruption has only increased. For example, (Sheldon, 96).…
