Energy drinks have been on the market now for some time now. People like the way they make you feel after they’ve quenched your thirst. What many may not be aware of are what the main ingredients are and the long term problems that can occur from misusing the product. Research has shown that energy drinks have the potential to be harmful and in some cases fatal. For this reason, I believe energy drinks should have an age restriction so no one under the age of 18 will be allowed to purchases these harmful drinks.
There are several ingredients that make up energy drinks and many people aren’t aware what it is doing to the inside of their body. These drinks are packed with high calories and loaded with sugar and caffeine. “The drinks raise your blood pressure and can harm the kidneys over time” (Wanjek). “Energy drinks alone are harmful if not used properly, but when alcohol is mixed with it the effects on the body may be fatal; especially, when too much is consumed” (“Alcohol and Energy Drinks”). Long term abuse of energy products such as Red Bull, Full Throttle, Vault, Amp or Monster will increase the risk of developing caffeine addiction, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, or sleep apnea. If we keep the product out of the reach of children and teens by setting a buying age restriction, it will lower the chances of the minors suffering from health problems related to energy drinks.
In all fairness, I believe the companies who make these products should still be able to do so. Although these energy drinks have been known to cause major health problems, a sip of the drink shouldn’t hurt if you’re really tired and need it.
