There is some bio-chemical evidence to suggest that high energy dogs might have below normal levels of these opiate compounds (endorphins), which can cause them to take part in self-stimulation activities such as chewing, in order to trigger the release of more endorphins. This behaviour of chewing makes the dog feel better, so is self-rewarding. Self harm can be seen in these cases, where a dog might bite it's limbs, tail or paws in order to get their "fix" of endorphins. Chewing has a calming effect on the brain so chewable items should always be available to a genuinely high energy/anxiety dog as it is an excellent way to self-calm in a healthy way.
An owner might describe their dog as being "naughty" or "anxious", when really, the dog genuinely has high energy with low levels of endorphins. It would also be useful to look at the breed of dog when discussing this topic. …show more content…
Recent research has shown that dogs experience increased levels of endorphins after exercise which can have positive effects on their behaviour, which is why exercise is essential. This endorphin rush happens mostly after intense exercise and not after low intensity walking, which means that there are many behavioural issues in dogs that can benefit from an increase in exercise. A good run and lots of walking will not only drain excess energy in the dog, but will aid in the production of both endorphins and serotonin which will help an anxious or high energy dog to feel calm, relaxed and sleepy. It is often the case that very anxious and/or active dogs need a job to do, so it is important that an owner realises this and does his/her best to provide the dog with as much stimulation as it needs in order to prevent undesirable behaviours
