Are Electric Car Green?
In the article Electric cars: are they really more polluting than gas? Stephen Puddicombe tells us about the possibility that electric cars pollute more than gasoline powered cars. Puddicombe explains how certain provinces in Canada do not have eco-friendly methods of producing electricity. Some provinces burn coal, some burn natural gas and some use hydro electric damming to make electricity. Puddicombe has come to the conclusion that electric cars are greener in certain places and more polluting in others. In British Columbia an electric car pollutes less than in Alberta were fossil fuel is burned to make electricity. Many provinces such as Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia burn fossil fuels to produce electricity. In these provinces, an electric car will produce more pollution than a gasoline equivalent. (Puddicombe) Although electric cars produce more pollution in these provinces, the opposite could be said for British Columbia. In BC, electricity is produced via hydro electric dams. No direct pollution is produced when the electricity is made, but there is a large amount of “environmental pollution” created. When a hydro electric dam is being built, surrounding areas are flooded, and in the process wildlife habitats are lost, and eco systems that depend on the river are altered. Even though hydro electric dams do not create pollution, the environmental consequences are huge. Some provinces that use fossil fuel to produce electricity are investing into renewable resource technology. The technology includes solar panels and wind turbines. Both have their pros and cons but produce considerably less pollution than fossil fuel burning methods. I believe that until electricity is made only through renewable methods, gasoline cars will always pollute less that electric
