Dermatomyositis is a muscle disease where it causes weakness in the muscles and can cause a skin rash. Joints can also be affected. This disease affects children between the ages of 5 and 15 years old and adults ages of late 40’s to early 60’s. Females are more likely to get dermatomyositis than men are. There is not a cure for dermatomyositis but there is treatment that can help improve symptoms. These symptoms include skin changes and muscle weaknesses. Your skin can change to a dusky red or to a violet color. It is anywhere on your face, knuckles, nails, chest, back, and elbow. The muscle weaknesses occur in the shoulders, neck, upper arms, thighs, and hips. It occurs on the left and right side of your body and it can slowly get worse.
