Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg Illinois, to August and Clara Johnson on January 6, 1878.
His parents emigrated to America from Northern Sweden.
August Johnson decided to change the family last name to Sandburg’s after coming across several August Johnsons.
Carl left school at the age of 13 to work odd jobs to help support his family.
