There are very few national debates within the country of Canada that are as prominent as the arguments surrounding the Atlantic seal hunt. The seal hunt is a traditional event that happens annually in the Atlantic provinces of Canada which takes place in the early spring of the year. This annual hunt provides a significant source of income to many of the residents in the Atlantic provinces (Sanger, 1998). The large debate surrounding the topic of the seal hunt is due to the fact that many people believe that the hunt is inhuman and should be stopped. The other side of this debate is that the hunt is not only humane but is also important to the Atlantic provinces and therefore should continue (Vaughan, 2009).…

The article by Cory Mathews, “Satellite tracking of a killer whale (Orcinus orca) in the eastern Canadian Arctic documents ice avoidance and rapid, long- distance movement into the North Atlantic” tracks the 90-day explorations of two killer whales. According to the Mathews, “In August 2009, we deployed satellite transmitters onto killer whales in Admiralty Inlet, Baffin Island, to (1) determine seasonal movements in the eastern Canadian Arctic and (2) distribution in the North Atlantic.” They did this by shooting titanium darts (tags) that would penetrate the dermal tissue upon contact. These devices would send 300 transmissions each day via Polar- orbiting satellites. The results showed that the killer whales would travel long- distance movement…

The marine mammal I have chosen to do my research paper on is the Orca Whale, also known as a killer whale. The genus or scientific name is Orcinus, also known as the killer whale. I have chosen to do my paper on this marine mammal because ever since I was young, I loved going to Sea World and watching the Shamu show. These incredible animals grow up to weigh as much as six tons and grow in length between 23 and 32 feet long, the relative size of a school bus. Orca or killer whales are easy to detect because of their distinctive markings, black and white coloring.…

False Killer Whales versus Killer Whales Both Killer whales (Orcinus orca) and False killer whales (Pseudorca Crassidens) belong to the Delphinidae family. False killer whales resemble orcas because of the shape of their skulls, but the two species are actually not closely related (Baird, 2012). False killer whales are found in all tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate seas (MarineBio, 2013), usually in relatively deep offshore waters (Taylor, et al., 2008). In contrast, killer whales are often found in cold coastal waters (National Geographic, 2015).…

Imagine being with your family and friends on any given day and all of a sudden someone takes you away from them. This is what parks are doing to get orcas, which is considered to be kidnapping and if it were children instead of whales it would be illegal. They are kidnapping them in the wild and making the orca their entertainment slave so they can gain a profit. What they are doing is inhumane and also not healthy for these orcas. Seaworld and other parks want to entertain people and make money, so they take orcas from the wild and breed them.…

In my speech, I will be describing the trials and triumphs of solitude, and the bittersweetness that come after. In both The Diary of Anne Frank and Island of the Blue Dolphins, there is a time of isolation with both times of optimism, and also pessimism. In both Island of the Blue Dolphins and The Diary of Anne Frank, the book starts off with an average girl of her time and place without anything to write a book about, but then their lives take a turn for the worst. In Island of the Blue Dolphins, Karana, the main character, loses her father in a unnecessary battle over otter pelts and what is a fair share.…

Endangered species are organisms that have such a reduced population that they are threatened with extinction. There are thousands of different species that are included in this list. Millions of years before humans existed, causes of extinction of living things were mostly linked to geological and climate effects (environmental change). Even though, environmental change is still the primary root for the extinction of organisms, but now the process of extinction is accelerated by human modernization and development and activity.…
