Throughout the course of history, many once successful and prosperous nations and people have transitioned into lands with great fear and turmoil. But how? When we think back to post-World War Two, we often think of Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Nazi Party. Not only were the objectives of the Nazi Party horrendous, so were Hitler’s leadership skills. Yes, he did ignite passion in many of the German people, however he ignored the true problems of Germany and blamed problems on Jews, thus leading to concentration camps and mass executions. So what makes a valuable leader? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, leadership is “the power or ability to lead other people” (“Definition of”). Unfortunately, society has it all wrong. One of these people is Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany. Merkel has constantly been determined by doing things that have been perceived as unattainable. For example, as a child, she constantly was at the top of her class, except the time she once failed physics. Instead of giving up, Merkel went on to earn a PhD in physics and physics became her first career. Merkel has often been called “the most powerful woman in the world today” (Llana). This power comes from her persistence through tenacious situations. This grit has made her a world changer in Germany, as well as a global scale. Her election to power has been a breakthrough in German history, as she is the first woman chancellor and does not come from a political background. Instead of spending her younger years on political campaigns, she was earning a Ph.D in physics. Although she doesn’t possess much political experience, she has been successful in meeting the immense expectations of the German people.
