The Renaissance Era was a time of rebirth. The people rediscovered ancient roman and greek scriptures and sprouted an interest in learning. The music of the time is completely different than what we hear today. Poets and composers came together and created a genre of music called Madrigals. Medieval drama was more focused on a spiritual theme and was often put on by monks and members of the church. When the Renaissance Era began, a new kind of play arose. These plays were shorter and called “Interludes”. The Renaissance English Drama started to venture off of mystery and moral-based plays and began using comedy. The first play that was not based on spirituality was called “Fulgens and Lucres”. The Renaissance Era was also the beginning of plays based off of political standpoints. John Skeltons, “Magnyfycence”, was known for its comedic mockery of Cardinal Wolsey. John Skeltons provocative play made him relocate to escape Cardinal Wolsey’s retribution. Tragedy based plays were also developed in the Renaissance Era. Renaissance English Drama was inspired by Greek and Latin writers to construct tragedy based plays. A couple of these tragedy based plays are: “Damon and Pythias” and “New Interlude of Vice Containing the History of Horestes”. Queen Elizabeth was a huge supporter of theatrical arts. Renaissance Drama is also known as Elizabethan Drama because of Elizabeth’s acknowledgement and encouragement of the theatrical arts.
