Observing and speaking with the Catholic people, Hispanics especially, I found that many of them weren’t particularly aware of why they worshipped a certain way, the significance of symbols or what their own belief system was in terms of doctrine and theology. Yet, with the portion of light that they have in knowing that Christ is our Savior, they give full devotion to…
Can history books be trusted? Many textbooks just skim the surface or contain other bias. Relying on one source of information can be risky. The story of Christopher Columbus is one specific example Recent evidence of the use of violence and slavery, the forced conversion of native peoples to Christianity, and the introduction of a host of new diseases proves that Columbus should not be celebrated.…
Popular Catholicism in the early colonial period was striving and beginning to emerge. It is through religion and religious beliefs that culture that members of social groups attempt to make sense of the world. According to Sanabria, “In many ways, Latin American and Caribbean peoples who came under the sway of the Spanish and Portuguese have been largely catholic since the early colonial period”(Sanabria, p. 182). A reason that explains the emergence of this is due to religious persecution through the campaigns against idolatry. European secular and religious colonizers engaged in widespread campaigns against what they considered idols and sacred worship places.…

In today’s society, people associate religion with believing in a “higher power”. Even though most people live their life based on believing in a certain thing or living a certain way, I myself have never really committed to a religious affiliation. Even so, I have always admired the devotion some people put into their religion. Upon researching local religious congregations, the one that came to my attention was St. Thomas Moore. St. Thomas is a local catholic church in Tallahassee, Florida.…
For as long as the Roman Catholic Church has been around, it has tried to solidify its control by strengthening its orthodoxy. One way the Church did this was through persecuting the populace for heresy. It is then ironic to find out that one of the churches most influential organizations, the Jesuits, were disbanded by the pope on rumors of heresy. The pope, Clement XIV, did not suppress the Jesuits for heresy but for more political reasons. After losing the support of Portugal, he dispersed the Order to appease the French and Spanish rulers in order to save face and keep their support.…
The Jesuits presence in Asia was part of a global mission to preach Christianity mainly catholic Christianity. The first attempt by the Jesuits to reach China was made in 1552 by St. Francis Xavier, Navarrese priest and missionary and founding member of the Society of Jesus. Santeria is a religion originating out of Cuba from the sixteenth century, and incorporates elements of African religion, Roman Catholicism and French Spiritism. It is an important religious influence in Cuba whose beliefs and practices have integrated into many cultures including, but not limited to, the United States. The worship of the saints, or Santeria, has a relatively new history, coming into existence by help of the slave trade and innovating thinking of the people held captive. The followers of Santeria persevered against European attempts to strip them of their traditions. The slaves developed their religion as a challenge to being colonized, and “...as a counter hegemonic challenge to the social, economic, and political order…

Why do groups of people need a religious system in order to form stable cultures and societies? In his address before the Farmington Trust, philosopher Edward Goldsmith argues the importance of religion as a control mechanism for a stable society. He discusses a philosophy in which, “(Religion) provides a goal, whose achievement must ensure the society’s stable relationship with its environment, and a means of achieving this goal, i.e. a ‘hierarchical organisation of instructions or guidelines.’” (Goldsmith) In order to illustrate this organization, provided for by religion, and vital to a stable society, aspects of Ancient Greek culture are highlighted.…
