A relationship of mutual affection between two people which includes honesty, trustworthiness, loyalty, congeniality, integrity, and caring is friendship, which is a necessity relation for all human beings as social creatures. (Edmonds, 2010). The epic of Gilgamesh is the story of a powerful, half human half god, king and his friend, brother, and companion Enkidu. According to my perspective, one the fundamental theme of this epic is friendship, therefore, based on the definition of friendship I argue that the affiliation between Enkidu and Gilgamesh was friendship. Gilgamesh was no crueler, he did not sleep with any women, and he became kind hearted and he rejects Ishtar because he did not want to be one her lovers who will be no more if she finds anyone better and stronger than him. Additionally, he veiled Enkidu like the bride to show his integrity, his support, and true friendship towards him.
In conclusion, in the epic of Gilgamesh, the relation between Enkidu and Gilgamesh was a relationship of amity. As true friends, they were supportive and caring about each other.
