Reitan And Shaw Conformity Study

Great Essays
In order to solidify the concept of conformity I am going to discuss a study that was conducted by Reitan and Shaw, which discussed conformity by examining attributes such as the individual’s personality, the kind of stimuli that evokes an individual to confirm, the situational factors and examining intragroup relationships. The individual personality factor that was examined in Reitan and Shaw’s study was group membership, which essentially stated that individuals that belongs to a multitude of groups need consensual support. This is because individuals belonging to many groups have a higher tendency to conform than individuals belonging to fewer groups. This is because individuals who are apart of more groups are exposed to more kinds of stimuli …show more content…
In addition, it was predicted that females within mixed-sex groups were more likely to confirm than females in same-gender groups. While women were more likely than males to conform, regardless of gender, men and women confirmed more in mixed-sex groups than same-sex groups. So, why is this study from 1964, important? Well, I am so glad you asked because that study gave us the five factors that affect conformity, that are mentioned in the textbook. So with conformity obviously being a huge focal point of our presentation, I used Reitan and Shaw’s study as a frame of reference to analysis the movie, Conspiracy. The one finding from Reitan and Shaw’s study that framed my analysis of the movie was the finding that men and women conform more in mixed-sex groups than in same-sex …show more content…
From my perspective, I took the idea of “We understand each other” and translated it to “So you understand Heydrich” because Heydrich reminds me of someone who talks in the third-person. In my interpretation people who talk in the third person are either really funny or just plan arrogant. Well, Heydrich to me, is the definition of arrogant. It is either his way or the highway. But, I want to refer back to the study, I mentioned earlier by Reitan and Shaw. As I was reading that article I thought, okay we have all males in this scenario, why is no one opposing Heydrich and even if someone does, it is only like for 10 seconds before Heydrich changes their mind otherwise. That’s because Heydrich has the legitimate power to do so. According to the textbook legitimate power is defined as “a group’s ability to influence others because of being elected, appointed, or selected to exert control over a group.” So, this definition definitely correlates with Heydrich’s idea of what he thinks conformity is, where again it is essentially the notion of either Heydrich’s way of the highway. That idea is not only prominent in this example with Kritzinger but also when Heydrich addresses the group at one point during the movie and says “all I want from this meeting is unanimity......and no trouble getting what has to be done,

Conformity can be a major problem, leading to dangerous and negative impacts, but at the same time it can be a good thing. For example, if an individual has bad habits, but looks to others who have better habits, that individual can be influenced to be more like them and change those habits (Durlauf 138). The different motivations that are…

Booker T. Washington, an African-American educator once stated, “in America, through pressure of conformity, there is freedom of choice, but nothing to choose from.” In other words, the world gives infinite choices to make but yet, we decide to make the choices society prefers us to make. In the article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man” Tom Leppard made the wise decision to make the choices he desired to perform instead of conforming. According to dictionary definition, social conformity can be defined as an agreement between an individual's behavior and a group's standards or expectations. One should not change their looks, beliefs, or behavior to fit in with society because it destroys one’s uniqueness and humans are naturally meant to be themselves.…

I'm going to talk about Asch and Milgram experiments and discuss whether or not the groups that knew each other versus the groups that don't, to determine whether or not the groups are more susceptible to conformity.” The Asch conformity experiments were a series of studies that starkly demonstrated the power of conformity in groups.” The Milgram experiment, “was an experiment focusing on the conflict between obedience to authority and personal conscience.” Now that we know what each experiment is about lets talk about them. First, the Asch experiment, in my own words would be a trial that was ran to ask a series of questions to see if others would answer the question correctly or go with what the vast majority said whether or not the answer…

Colin Wilson in his quote is trying to explain the downfalls of normality. He describes how our day to day normal lives are similar to a cow standing in the rain, just taking it. I completely agree with Colin Wilson, I think he has a very good point about normality today. How we see everything pass by us, yet it doesn't effect us in a deep rooted sense. The average man conforms so easily to the demands of society and he takes no gratitude in individuality.…

In this day and age, conformity is what decides who people are and what their future will look like. Normally when people think of conformity, the negative connotations associated with the word come to mind. For instance, teens doing drugs or drinking alcohol because friends or siblings tell them it’s okay to do so. However, I don’t think conformity is always a bad thing, and I first hand experienced the positive effects of conforming.…

The effects of gender on an individual’s level of conformity: a modification of the Asch experiment Abstract Both males and females readily conform their judgments and actions to peer groups, which has been recognised as advantageous (Haun & Tomasello, 2011). What we wanted to know, however, was whether males or females conformed more often. In this experiment, we replicated the Asch conformity experiment whilst focusing on differences in gender. We examined these inter-gendered differences in a sample of 100 undergraduate students of Monash University. Participants will complete the Asch (1951) line study, using the fMORI technique (Mori, 2007), in same-sex groups of four.…
