Registered Nurse Reflective Report

Through clinical reasoning and critical thinking, the most important lesson I have learned is the development of strong communication skills. Being prepared and knowing what questions and how to ask the questions to elicit subjective information that is relevant to the patients’ health is important. The subjective phase of the interview gives the nurse the opportunity to develop a good relationship with the patient. This in turn may give the nurse a better picture of what is going on with the patient. One example would be asking relevant follow up questions to have a better understanding of patients’ condition. During my interview with F.A. I initially hesitated to discuss a very personal situation about her post traumatic syndrome. I had to distinguish what information was important to determine if this seemingly healthy looking young lady had any medical issues in the past that may be prevented in the future. Once the problem was identified, goals were discussed, such as no homicidal/suicidal tendencies in one month. The action to be taken was to acknowledge her feelings and reach out for help if she became overwhelmed. Let the patient paint a detailed picture of the symptoms, when it started, how it started, what makes it worst, and what makes it better. The subjective information obtained can assist me in focusing a little more on that particular problem during the objective phase. Being more detailed in communicating my findings to the healthcare team members is a change I would make as a Baccalaureate prepared Registered Nurse.
