Refrigerator Mother Theory

A widely accepted cause of autism that sparked controversy among professionals and parents was the popularity of the “refrigerator mother” theory. A theory that placed blame and guilt on parents, notably mothers of children with autism. Leo Kanner believed that a child’s inability to bond or connect within their environment was a result of limited affection, coldness, and solidarity displayed by the parents. Bettelheim facilitated this theory that children with autism were similar to “prisoners in concentration camps and parents were portrayed as guards” (Zager, Wehmeyer & Simpson, 2012, p. 4) asserting parental power and control. Kanner later rejected his theory and a shift occurred with Rimland’s idea suggesting that autism was a neurodevelopment …show more content…
Single- subject designs allows for the comparison of individual performances across various settings over time. The specific settings and detailed description of participants and data collected promotes for successful replication. Dependent variables represent observable behavior affected by the response of the independent variables. The measurement of this behavior allows for observers to compare previous performances or look for any behavioral patterns. The examiner can actively manipulate the independent variables which must be operationally defined in order to yield reliable measurements. If a pattern of response with the dependent variables during a baseline is established then an intervention to its effect is formulated. The experimental control helps to alleviate threats and increases the external validity when the “design documents three demonstrations of the experimental effect at three different points in time”. The data is collected and graphed to determine differences with the baseline and intervention. The social validity is examined through the independent variables change to the socially important outcomes of the dependent variables. The social validity emphasizes the social importance of acceptable goals that meet clinical needs and is enhanced by the independent

Article B In the article “Breast milk and subsequent intelligence quotient in children born preterm” A. Lucas and R. Morley (1992) conducted a thorough experiment on the effects of mothers’ breast milk on premature newborns. The researchers are not new to this line of work, they conducted another experiment before this one showing a correlation between preterm infants who drank breast milk and better development. In the article I read, the researchers did an exceptional job on perfecting their experiment. They had both dependent and independent variables, and an experimental group and a control group.…

Introduction Adult boot camps, also called “shock incarceration” programs, were first implemented in Georgia and Oklahoma in the early 1980s (Guerrero, 2009, p.73). They are short-term residential facilities with programs that resemble those within a military basic training camp. The purpose of these camps is to scare or “shock” an individual away from participating in criminal behavior by placing them in a harsh physical environment. In late 1990s, third-generation boot camps began to rise and are still used today. These camps incorporate drug and alcohol treatment programs and emphasize an aftercare component when individuals are released back into society (as seen in the Alabama boot camp program).…

In Let Me Hear Your Voice, Catherine expresses how autism replaces the norm, catapulting families into uncertain futures. "We think we have some control, even as the impassive, impossible truth sits staring malevolently at us. ‘Whether you sink or whether you swim, you will deal with me,’ whispers the voice of catastrophe. 'Whether you want me or whether you don 't, I am here, forever." Maurice (1993)…

This novel was strikingly honest from the very beginning. The kind of honesty that implores the reader to empathize with the characters and connects them to your psych for an eternity. It is imperative that I note here that such raw emotions are brought about by traumatic circumstances. Consequently, there may be some individuals who should proceed with caution.…

One of those being how autism was initially blamed on “bad parenting” and “refrigerator mothers” in the 1950’s, suggesting that the cause of autism had been based entirely on the parents style of raising their children. Another point the article raises is that in a 2010 study of the effects phthalates, a common chemical, which are endocrine disruptors that had shown correlations to social impairments of children between the ages of 7 and 9 (Klass 2011). However, these correlations don’t necessarily mean that Y equates to X and this is accentuated when Klass quote Dr. Hurtz-Picciotto (The women behind said study) with “No case probably has one cause”. The final piece of information is essential which it states how that answer to whether autism is either genetic or environmental isn’t quite clear, and suggests it is in fact a mixture of both. With this it is of utmost importance to take preventative measures (Such as avoiding pesticides, and chemicals of the like) to reduce the chances of…

Clinical inquiry helps clinicians to determine the best treatment from the available choices. Evidence-based care is expected in healthcare because it leads to higher quality of care and best patient outcomes. Evidence-based practice encompass the best available evidence, as well as, clinical expertise and patients’ preferences (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). Clinicians must conduct a well-constructed search to appraise the evidence. The search of evidence can be a complicated process due to the large amount of scientific information available (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015).…

Attachment can be defined a number of ways and interpreted in many more ways. In general Psychology, the term attachment is used in reference to the relationship between an infant and its parents or caregiver. In layman’s terms, it would be described as how the infant or toddler reacts when its parents have left the room and how it is comforted, whether it is self-comfort or it cries until its parents return. In the African American household, knowledge of the different types of attachment are nonexistent. Infants and toddlers that have the tendency to cry whenever its parents leave the room are perceived to be spoiled, “ruined, and need to be exposed to other people besides its parents.…

The observation took place on March 27th, 2016 in my home located in Montville, NJ. Based on an interview conducted with my mother, who is my primary caregiver, I will interpret her parenting style as well as its influences on my development. A parenting style refers to a caregiver’s behaviours and beliefs about parenting, including how they interact with their child. Diana Baumrind proposed four kinds: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and rejecting-neglectful. According to the the interview, my mother is both authoritative and authoritative.
